Cambodia Opposition Denounces 'Staged' Rally
Associated Press | The Wall Street Journal | 9 June 2013
PHNOM PENH, Cambodia—Cambodia's main opposition
party denounced a large demonstration held Sunday against one of their
leaders in the capital, a rally they say was staged by supporters of
Prime Minister Hun Sen to intimidate rivals ahead of July elections.
More than 10,000 protesters gathered in
Phnom Penh to lash out against opposition chief Kem Sokha for allegedly
saying that exhibits at a Khmer Rouge-era genocide museum in Phnom Penh
were faked. Mr. Sokha has denied the allegations, and his party says
the campaign against him is politically motivated.
On Friday, the Southeast Asian nation's legislature approved a bill
making it a crime to deny atrocities were committed by the country's
genocidal 1970s Khmer Rouge regime. Critics worry the law will be used
as a weapon against Hun Sen's political opponents.
The bill was passed unanimously in the absence of opposition
lawmakers, who were expelled from the legislature this week, ostensibly
on grounds they had left their old parties to join a new, merged party
to contest the July 28 vote.
The ruling party of Hun Sen, who has been in power since 1985, holds
90 seats in the assembly and is expected to win an overwhelming share of
the 123 seats at stake. Mr. Sokha is deputy president of the Cambodia
National Rescue Party, whose leader Sam Rainsy lives in self-exile to
avoid jail on what are widely seen as politically motivated charges.
Pro-government media had recently publicized comments allegedly made
by Mr. Sokha that exhibits at Phnom Penh's famous Tuol Sleng genocide
museum, a prison turned torture center, were faked. Mr. Sokha, however,
has said parts of an audio clip of the comments were altered by
detractors.
Yim Sovann, a spokesman for Mr. Sokha's party, said the rally Sunday was "orchestrated" by ruling party supporters.
The protest was led by Chum Mey, a survivor from Tuol Sleng prison
who is now president of the Victims Association of Democratic Kampuchea.
But the victims group issued a statement Saturday saying the group had
nothing to do with the protest and would hold a vote to replace him. The
group said Mr. Mey's participation in the rally ran counter to the
association's political neutrality.

Yobal Khmer
Good job Hun Sen. Once again you outsmart your opponents. Poor oppositions, they just can`t seem to get a break. All that outside degree still can`t compare to a facade doctorate degree lol..lol...lol
These Cambodians have allowed themselves to be used for money, personal gain and lack of courage even though they know fully well that the CPP government is exploitative, corrupt, selfish, and compromising Cambodia as a nation.
Divided to this extent in the broad daylight of government's inefficiency, corruption, and plain exploitation, especially of the poor, Cambodia is certainly ripe again for alarming civil chaos, instability and down the road possibly a civil war. All it needs right now is a foreign backer, then civil war shall return.
In the old day Thailand would have been quick in exploiting this political upheaval by supporting the opposition and Cambodia might switch from one boss in the east to that in the west if the opposition won the war or got more entrenched in the grip of Vietnam if the CPP managed to come out of the civil war with victory while at the same time losing her land on both fronts.
The number of people turning up at the demonstration really disturbs me and points clearly to the fact that Cambodia is certainly a strongly divided nation.
One should not fail to realize that despite its horrible records of governing, corruption, short-term economic prosperity and development at the expense of the country in the long run, a sizeable number of Cambodians continue to support the CPP over the opposition and refuse to look for changes for fear of worse outcome. Without changes and the overhaul of the social, political, and legal institutions that can only be delivered by the opposition, Cambodia will forever be a country of plutocracy where the minority rich and powerful will continue to rule unfairly and greedily creating at the same time a new condition for a revolution.
Foreign companies, especially those from Vietnam and China just love to do business in Cambodia as, though the political climate is not good for real long-term investment, the short-term climate is quite suitable and could not be better for exploitation of her natural resources.
My good friends, we are in your country to help you. Here are a few bucks for you to enjoy yourself and buy something for your poor family and let us help you extract your resources in return.
Sad, disappointed, and regrettable to see, but this is the reality of Cambodia, a divided nation on its path to chaos and instability with no unity, common sense, and vision in sight!
Pissed Off
Chum Mey has no integrity. He listens to the order from Hun Sen and made a big deal of a speech of Kem Sokha without knowing the bad consequence of his action: helping Hun Sen to consolidate his power and Viatnam to hold on Cambodian territory and Kas Tral. He wants Cambodian to always remember the killing fields but to forget Vietnam's control of Cambodia.
Kem Sokha has not lost his credibility, on the contrary, his credibility was enhanced by the paid demonstration organized by the CPP.
No matter what happens, although paid demonstration called for by Chum Mey and Hun Sen against Kem Sokha, the Majority of Cambodian youth will vote for CNRP for the benefit of themselves, their grand parents, parents and poor Cambodians because of the 7 points policy promised by CNRP after winning the election.
CNRP will win(51% of the total votes)on July 28, 2013 and Sam Rainsy will be the next Prime Minister of Cambodia
The CNRP's seven points are reiterated below:
1)An individual 65 years of age and older would receive monthly assistance of 40,000 riels
2)A worker's minimum monthly wage would be 600,000 riels
3)A public servant's minimum monthly salary would be one million riels
4)A farmer would be guaranteed to receive at least 1,000 riels per kilogram of rice
5)Poor people would receive free medical care
6)Youths would receive equal education opportunity and proper employment
7)The prices of oil, fertilizer, electricity and the interest rate on loans would be reduced
Sam Rainsy is the best Kaun Khmer patriot who dares to declare that Vietnam is the new colonialist that annexed most of Cambodian territory.
That is why he is the only Khmer that Vietnam is afraid of. Vietnam try by all mean to eliminate him from Cambodia by using its puppet government and kangaroo court in Cambodia to deny Sam Rainsy in entering Cambodia.
This is the 21st century; Vietnam can not colonize Cambodia as the last century. The 1991 Paris Peace Agreement (1991 PPA) signed by 19 signatory countries including Cambodia and Vietnam guaranteeing the territorial integrity of Cambodia. If Cambodia has a new government which is independent of Vietnam, it can ask the signatory countries to reconvene the 1991 PPA to rescind all unequal treaties between Hun Sen Government and Vietnam from 1979 to 2005 and reclaim all lost territory annexed by Vietnam during that period including Kah Tral.
No matter how sneaky Vietnam is, it will not be able to hide its bad intention any more. The world knows that Vietnam is not a honest nation. Vietnam is a thief who never respects its promises. During Vietnam American war, King Sihanouk of Cambodia helped Vietnam by offering a sanctuary or a hiding place near the border of Cambodia and Vietnam to protect Vietnamese and Vietcong from US bombing. In return Vietnam repays the debt by taking a big chunk of Cambodian territory including Kah Tral.
To destroy your enemy is to understand your enemy! The opposition must expose the true nature of the Vietcong government and never submit to the Vietcong demand and domination!
Cambodian people must know who they are and they are human like the Viet and they have right to live on this Earth in peaceful way fill with life and liberty! If Cambodian people don't understand this basic concept of life and liberty then they are accepting the fate of our Khmer Krom people! What happen to the Khmer Krom people? Who speak for the Khmer Krom people suffering?
What happen to the Khmer Krom is real and it will continue to remind all Khmer people to the end of time of how the evil Vietnamese who are willing to cheat, to steal, and to kill for what they want from Khmer people! The Khmer people don't owe the Vietnamese anything so the Vietnamese don't ask anything more than this beside free our brothers and sisters Khmer Krom people to end the cycle of violent!

whatever it may be, yesterday protest mean that the CPP still has power to mobilize people and they can do it massively. It can demoralize the opposition activists to see such a strong turnout.
