Since the
first day of the 2013 election campaign, Khmers all over the country have shown
their courage and determination to demand social justice, true democracy, and
true national sovereignty from Hanoi's domination; something we had never before
witnessed in our modern history. During the election campaign, tens of thousands
of people, especially, the youths bravely volunteered to help the Opposition’s
(CNRP) campaign. During the Election Day as people lost their faith in the
authorities as well as the NEC to guarantee free and fair election results for
them, they actively participated in many different important roles such as that of ballot owners, election monitors, and fraud detectors that had all helped to ensure
this election would be a historic event for the country.
As we have already
seen this election campaign marked a momentous turning point for our country
that had never experienced this kind of election campaign in the past. Tens of thousands
of people pouring into the streets voluntarily helped campaigning for the
opposition (CNRP) party courageously even though the atmosphere was filled with
intimidation from the ruling party. This is in part because they are tired of
the long corrupt dictatorial rule of the CPP which has been installed by Hanoi
since 1979. The only hope for the future of the country is to change the
current government that has served Vietnamese interests at expense of the Khmers’.
As Khmers, we are excited and grateful to all of our fellow Khmer brothers and
sisters who have sacrificed their valuable time, energy, financial resources,
and even risking their lives in order to save our motherland from Hanoi's hegemony
and to bring true democracy to our nation.
To reach
their final goal of saving our nation from Hanoi's yoke and bringing the true
democracy to our nation, they want to make sure that the opposition CNRP wins
this election in dignity. On the long Election Day, our people were not only acting
as voters, but courageously participating in many activities that have
contributed to the ‘fairness’ of this election through detection of fraud and
other irregularities. After having cast their ballots, most people did not go
home; instead they stayed on to watch their ballots to make sure they had been counted
correctly. Some people acted as election monitors by watching all unusual
activities and recording all incidents via their mobile devices in order to
unveil the truth to the outside world; they successfully prevented some Vietnamese
nationals from voting in many polling stations and helped their fellow compatriots
whose names had been purposely deleted by the NEC, to vote. Other people got
angry with the polling station chief when they found out that their names had
been deleted from the voting list as part of the systematic election fraud
practised by the ruling party - the CPP.
As many Vietnamese
were allowed to vote freely by the NEC and the authorities whilst many Khmers
had no name to vote on, this situation had turned into a boiling point for all
Khmers. As the polling station chief refused to answer this question and made
no effort to solve the problem for the people, the situation quickly turned
into violence. Two military police vehicles were burned down by the angry protesters,
and it took a while before the situation was brought under control. All these
activities and incidents have clearly proven that Khmers no longer fear intimidation;
Khmers have started to see who are their real enemies and who are their real friends;
Khmers could not allow any one to cheat them anymore; Khmers started to wake up
and to protect themselves; and eventually Khmers have bravely proved themselves
as the true descendants of our hero King Jayavarman 7 who viewed the suffering
of his people as his own.
The provisional
results of this election which indicate the CPP has won this election contest
totally have not reflected the will of our people who have overwhelmingly
demanded a change. If this election had
been held in a free and fair atmosphere without the systematic fraud set up by
the CPP, the opposition party - the CNRP - would NOT have just lost by a narrow
margin (about 200,000 votes) but would have instead won by a landslide. The
rejection of the election results by the CNRP is the right and lawful means to
do in order to protect the voices, the will, and the rights of the majority of
the people who have courageously cast their ballots for change. As the battle
for and over election results continue, all Khmers have learned from the great
experience of this election that had never happened in our country before. The
brave, active participation of the people in this election process has shown forth
a great role model of the true descendants of our great ancestor Jayavarman 7, exhorting
us to carry on in our fight for justice, true democracy and independence for
our Khmer Nation.
