The United States yesterday urged a probe of alleged misconduct inCambodia's election but said
that opposition gains marked a positive steptoward democracy.
"What we strongly believe is that the Cambodian people need to be satisfied that the claims of irregularity...be thoroughly and credibly investigated," said Danny Russel, the US assistant secretary of state for East Asia.
But the veteran diplomat said that the July 28 election was "quite extraordinary" as few expected the performance of the opposition in acountry ruled by strongman Hun Sen since 1985.
Facing international pressure, Cambodia pardoned opposition leader SamRainsy that allowed him to return from exile.
Hun Sen's party said it secured 68 of the 123 seats in the lower house with 55 seats for the opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP), whichalleges fraud.
Russel voiced hope that Cambodia would build a "genuine two-party system."
"The fact that the opposition was able to achieve greater than one-third presence in the parliament is unprecedented, is dramatic and in my view is a very positive and very hopeful sign," Russel told reporters.
"Parliamentary rule, not one-man rule, would be a tremendous step forward for the country, for the people and for the region. I suspect it may take some time to play out," he said.
President Barack Obama's administration has put a high priority on building relations with Southeast Asia but has had frosty ties with Hun Sen, one of China's closest regional allies.
Obama visited Cambodia last year for an international summit but used his talks with Hun Sen to press him on human rights, in a meeting described by theWhite House as tense.
Ahead of the election, US lawmakers threatened to cut assistance to Cambodia unless Hun Sen allows democratic changes.

Hun Sen himself is Khmer Rouges (part of Vietminh from Hanoi, Communist Vietcong). As this Vietnamese dog rules Cambodia today is still the Khmer Rouges CPP regime (under the control and support of his evil Vietnamese boss in Hanoi).

The old era of post-genocide is up and it is time to make room for a new era for our motherland economic and social development to deserve the Angkorean legacy that our great ancestors have left for us.
The old era was marked with a remarkably high economic growth but high growth without equity cannot sustain the growth in the medium term. We need to develop high economic growth and social progress at the same time in order to be able to drive research and development activities with innovation.
By leaving the room for new leadership, Cambodia will enter a new era of pre-competition with her ASEAN neighbors in order to stand out as an economic tiger in the medium to long term.
What would be the risks of the present Excellencies, if you all help CNRP to change the current status quo to social progress?
1- You will be enjoying more long lasting economic growth as it is sustained by the social progress
2- You will keep all your title, wealth, and power in your own right according to the law without having a one-man show who bosses you around and says that he is the law,
3- You will enjoy a peaceful society where everyone in the society can at least make both ends meet and enjoy saving money,
4- You will be proud of your country Cambodia as its citizen can talk with any foreigner on equal footing.
Please be united to help CNRP change the current status quo of Cambodia to high economic growth and social progress!
