No Shirt, No Shoes, No Teeth, No Problem:
Say hello to Sprockets. He is a regular patron at one of our satellite schools, showing up each night in his one set of grimy, sticky clothes. He isn't here to study but to use our other "Members Only" services.
He starts with a quick wash before settling in for his evening meal, a hot dish of noodles, veggies and either fish or meat. It's often his only meal that day.
After this hearty meal, he heads off for his evening wash. As you can see from the first photo, by the time he arrives at our school, he is more than ready for a wash. Sprockets gets soap from our wash attendant and heads to the first available washroom. Whatever he does while in there, masses of soap, buckets of water are used; the water pouring out from under the door reminds me of a scene in Titanic.
By the time I arrive, I can often tell which washroom he is in by the line of impatient, disgruntled kids waiting outside.
Sprockets is undeterred by the dirty masses waiting for his washroom. With one set of clothes and few teeth, a man needs to be known for something: Sprockets has chosen good hygiene as his calling card, and a winning smile.
After pasting back on the same grimy clothes, he emerges from the washroom and heads straight to the best part: the talcum powder. And Sprockets does love the talc. OK, it may be the only free thing he has encountered in his short life. And aside from adding some dash to his newly-polished look, the talc also minimizes those wretched skin infections.
Occasionally he will head back home after this but more often than not he heads to "the screening room" - in this case, a smallish TV playing cartoons in an unused, open-air classroom.
At this point, you are probably wondering how you too can apply for such a membership. I'm sorry to say that memberships are usually by invitation only and quite exclusive.
However if you are a child who lives in/around this wretched area, without access to running water, usually without other means of nutrition - and you really need a safe, caring place to hang each night - then you are welcome to apply.
