US Asks Parties to ‘Work Together’ for the People

By Phorn Bopha and Joshua Wilwohl - September 26, 2013

The U.S. State Department on Tuesday called for the ruling CPP and opposition CNRP to “work together” and repeated its call for a transparent review of irregularities in July’s national election.

“The United States urges leaders of the ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) and the CNRP to work together to resolve differences in a way that serves the best interests of the Cambodian people,” State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said in a statement.

The statement follows Monday’s opening of the National Assembly, where only CPP lawmakers were in attendance. The CNRP boycotted the ceremony because it wants an independent investigation into election irregularities.

“The United States has an interest in the democratic process, but does not support any particular political party or individuals. In that context, we continue to believe there should be a credible and transparent review of irregularities in the July elections to assess and address flaws in the electoral process and give the Cambodian people greater confidence in the electoral system. We urge all parties to seize this opportunity to improve democratic processes and implement meaningful reforms, which strengthen the rule of law and increase respect for human rights,” the statement continues.

Despite the renewed calls for an independent investigation, CPP lawmaker Cheam Yeap said Wednesday that the election irregularities had already been solved.

“They should understand Cambodian law,” he said of the State Department remarks. “The safety boxes were opened. No one stole their vote. If the CPP would have stolen votes, we would get 122 seats, but we only got 68, down from 90 seats. The State Department should do their research and not let the CNRP use the CPP as their pretext.”

Council of Ministers spokesman Phay Siphan said the CPP “welcomes” the U.S.’ recommendation for both parties to work together and also wanted to see the CNRP in parliament.

“As Cambodians, we are so welcomed to that recommendation, and the P.M. [Hun Sen] repeatedly has publicly asked the CNRP to sit in the National Assembly. We don’t have any position against the CNRP. We see them as a partner. We welcome them,” he said.

thank you america. and thank you for accepting cambodia. we love america, too. please help cambodia to develop in all fields. cambodia wanted to be good ally of america just like japan, etc to america. please help train more younger generation of khmer youth. we eager for education from america. please help make cambodia great, fun and peaceful and prosperous and growing with development and justice for all.please also understand that the so-called election irregularities is a small margin of error in any election by some bad, crooked individual that's even investigated will not have a huge impact in the outcome of winner in cambodia's election. cnrp won 55 government seats, a huge jump from previous seats. please tell cnrp to participate in government as that is the best way they can represent the voices of their constituents in government. by them boycotting their participation, they cheated their constituents and their constituents can lose their voices in government. please understand that all changes and reforms in government of cambodia can only take place in government itself, not outside of it. so, it is crucial for cnrp which won 55 seats to participate in government so changes and reforms can take place legally in cambodia. and please advice the cnrp to take this opportunity with their 55 hard won seats and participate in government and wait until the next election to improve themself toward a real chance to win the election. for now, the cnrp can't win all, so they have to keep on dialoguing and cooperating with cambodian government in order to make cambodia reforms and improve in areas most urgently neeede. thank you for america's friendship and support and understanding.

please also understand that cambodia don't discriminate or be biased when it comes to doing business and accepting humanitarian assistance from our friends all over the world whether it's from china, japan, republic of south korea, america, etc, we can accept it all for the benefit of cambodia and its people. thank you for your understanding, america.

khmer/america friendship always.

A small communist group in Cambodia, including former King Sihanouk has always said that the U.S. is an aggressor. But conversely, the U.S. is a true friend of most Cambodian because the Khmers don't want let their country fall into communist hands. The only option for small country like Cambodia needs a good country friend Americans to help creating the freedom and democracy.

Long-life Americans and Cambodia

Why the CPP refused to have Independent Inquiry?
If the CPP legally won the election, why are they afraid of Inquiry?

asking the cpp to work for the people is like the continuation of oppressing the people, killing the people.

LOL that's all the U.S can say. If she wants to help CNRP, the U.S would put 100 times more pressure on CPP. My guess is that Sam Rainsy senses there is no help from his friend, and he will bring his people to sit in national assembly within two weeks. No change here. Sam Rainsy is weak.
