Angkor Wat was meant to represent Mount Meru, the residence of the gods in Hindu tradition. (Mount Meru has been called “The Olympus of the Hindus.”) Legend has it that Mount Meru is somewhere in the Himalayas. Hindu philosophers established that this holiest of mountains was the center of the universe, a cosmic point, the basis for the layout of all Hindu temples. Some thinkers have likened it to the human spinal cord.
