Cambodian Opposition Rally's Last Day Draws 20,000

‘How is Ou Virak going to build Cambodian democracy from within Cambodia with Mr. Hun Sen controlling all the security forces and refusing to abide by the rule of laws?

If that were possible with Hun Sen, Cambodia would not have needed Paris Peace Accord and UNTAC to be able to hold the first democratic election in Cambodia in 1993!’

About 20,000 Cambodian opposition supporters on Friday wrapped up a three-day demonstration to petition foreign embassies and the U.N. for intervention in what they claim was a rigged election.

While the international community is very unlikely to intervene in Cambodia's domestic affairs, the rallies served to highlight the opposition's demand for an independent probe into the July 28 poll, which it says returned Prime Minister Hun Sen to power illegitimately.

Throngs of cheering demonstrators marched through the capital this week as they delivered petitions to the French, British, U.S., Australian, Russian, Japanese, Indonesian and Chinese embassies and to the U.N. human rights office. The rallies ended peacefully.

Official election results extended Hun Sen's 28-year rule and gave his party 68 seats in parliament, compared to 55 for the opposition Cambodian National Rescue Party. The party says it was cheated out of a victory and that it will boycott parliament until the government has met its demands.

According to the petition — which the opposition says was thumb printed by 2 million people — the Cambodian government's failure to investigate election irregularities and its inauguration of the National Assembly without the opposition "take Cambodia back to a one-party system of governance."

The three-day demonstration coincides with the 22nd anniversary of the 1991 Paris Peace Accords on Cambodia, which laid the groundwork for U.N.-sponsored elections after the brutal rule of the Khmer Rouge and years of civil war that followed. The countries that received opposition petitions were all signatories to the 1991 Accords.

The government denies election fraud, and has rejected opposition demands for an independent investigation. It maintains that its inauguration of a new parliament in September was legitimate and has filled parliamentary commissions with ruling party members.

Ou Virak, president of the Cambodian Center for Human Rights, said that intervention from abroad was "not going to happen." Moreover, he said, seeking outside help was counterproductive to building democracy from within Cambodia.

"By going abroad, you're actually re-confirming this attitude of we need to depend on the U.N. jumping out of the sky, out of a plane or whatever, to rescue us," he said.

The Australian embassy said in a statement Friday that it had received the petition and that its ambassador, Alison Burrows, "urged both parties to continue their dialogue including on electoral reform."

Vietnamese Coffee Shop in Cambodia
by Freedom
July 18, 2009

Nowadays there are many Vietnamese Coffee Shops in Cambodia when Cambodian people seem never drink it before. During the Vietnamese immigrants move to live in Cambodia, it seems Cambodian people are going to be lack job, lose job and have no more chance like before.

When you drive around the Toul Tompong, Kirirom, Olympec and other places in Phnom Penh location, you will see more and more the Vietnamese Coffee Shops with many Vietnamese immigrations.

Vietnamese young girl with her short skirt which is attracted Cambodian people including the students who never like drinking Coffee before here.

A young girl is from South Vietnam. She can not speak Cambodian language including counting Cambodian money, but she could live and run a shop to attract many Cambodian people to drink everyday.
A Vietnamese young girl whom run the Coffee Shop near Human Resources University said, "I do not know how many people come perday, but i have income 500 000 Riel/day."

You could see, she just runs a small Coffee Shop, but she and her family could earn more money. In accordance her incoming, 500 000 Riel is equal around 120$. It is just aday. So how she can earn per month, and year?

I have presented in this Vietnamese Coffee Shop one hour. I see the most of coffee drinking are Cambodian people whom are attracted by her short skirt and white skin.

It is so hard when Vietnamese Coffee Shops increasing from day to day, and Cambodian people still have no job, but they must spend time for coffee drinking and to see Vietnamese young girls.

Ou Virak needs to step down from whatever position he is in. How can a human right advocate undermine the Cambodian people will? How can Ou Virak so certain about the international communities intervention? Is he God or he is just a human being like the rest of us? If he is a human right advocate, he should be advocating on human rights violation in Cambodia and try to do something about it. He should not even had opinionated on CNRP stance to find justice for their supporters. What a dog this Ou Virak is..!!

Hey man! Why are you so selective in your memory? In Cambodia there are Chinese too not just the Vietnamese and what is so special about the Vietnamese? What you are saying is pure bullshit because there are million and million of illegal Vietnamese immigrant in Cambodia and the Vietnamese Coffee Shops certainly don't need Cambodian customers to make a decent money. The Vietnamese are notoriously for doing business only with their own kind and if there is any Vietnamese business and the Vietnamese community is not far from their place of business.

I tell you what if I want to look at a beautiful women and I would turn to pornography which is cheaper and more clean than the Vietnamese women that you are talking about! Here a cup of coffee to you!ahahhahah

Dear Jendha,

Hope you enjoyed your trip to NY, and thanks for the video clips of the protest there.

Your suggestions and thoughts on this matter are perfectly legitimate.

On the whole, I try not to comment on individuals' statements and or their personal concerns unless their actions are unduly damaging to the cause of justice and democracy in Cambodia.

Occasionally, I would write a piece on 'spin doctors', a NGO chief, or pro-CPP youth etc., not so as to give them undeserved public importance or attention as some readers might surmise [morally, and on a personal level they are the kind of people I would not invite home for dinner!, whilst I'm sure their feelings about me is mutual!], but rather because I feel their public statements and or actions as well as their motives deserve to be decoded to the wider public and interested observers.

That, at least seems to be part of my unenviable burden and task as "School of Vice"! Once we grasp and discern men's true motives and thinking it makes things much easier for us who stand alongside the oppressed to effectively and positively facilitate their cause.

I agree with the two quotes posted above on the main page, and if I have not taken every opportunity to rebut or comment on every disagreeable thing said, I should hope that this is taken as a gesture of restraint or forbearance on my part rather than lack of alertness or vigilance in defense of public interest. I have not for example said a word on Mr Lao Mong Hay’s recent controversial statement concerning the status of Koh Tral. I think in his case, it’s more of a misjudgement rather than anything else of malicious nature. Educated people are also prone to making intellectual errors too, just as honest mistakes committed by honest, but naive leaders and politicians can have far-reaching and negative consequences on millions of innocent lives. That is one critical reason for wanting to see institutional pluralism taking roots and flourishing in Cambodia.

Finally, I should hope that reporters and journalists - particularly, those working for foreign media outlets - seek out wisely alternative opinions that are balanced and ethical in their comments and observations of public affairs when they are preparing a media report. However, if these journalists and reporters continuously resort to the same unethical sources for their stories, then we will have to assume that they are either ill judged or ill advised at best, or at worst, ill bred themselves.

And that is that!

PS: Weekends are not made for long lectures, eh?

Mr. Ou Virak, how you can fight with the ruling party, which control everything. Need outside help is one of the best way to keep pressure on the government. You should learn about politic more. If you are really on the human right side and the civil organizations, you should understand how is the situation in Cambodia. Come on, use your common sense....

to understand what's going on in cambodia, one has to observe and study all, why people what people do. there's reason behind every action. people who want changes usually are victims of some kind.

for me, i'm more willing to hear what ou virak has to say because he's observing and studying the situation in cambodia and using his head. anyway, i read a little about the so-called paris peace accord for cambodia. the accord itself was more for foreign power to leave cambodia be and let cambodia decide for itself. for the cnrp to use the that accord now is kind of irrelevant because the election is an internal affairs, not some kind of foreign making. singnatories of the accord will not get involved with cambodia election. they may suggest some ways to work it out, but they will not come in and take over like during the untac era because cambodia pass that stage already. what i see is the cnrp tries hard to get the signatory countries to help them and recognize their so-called election victory. the cnrp did not win decisively, they won a lot, but not enough to make them the real winner. the real winner in this election is the cpp, they won the narrow majority. cnrp has to wait for next election. i think the so-called irregularites won't make much a difference for the outcome of this election. it might improve the way people do their jobs in the next election, though. of course, the cpp side had to think twice, too about their wishful thinking to run cambodia until hun sen is 90 or whatever. what's going now is probably make that dream of theirs not a reality, especially with so many discontent. but the cnrp should count only on people's discontent. cnrp leadership should look further past their constituents' discontent toward the sake of the nation. democracy will happen in cambodia. but it require patient and a little more time for people to get adjusted to changes.

here's my suggestion: if the signatory countries really want to help cambodia, they should keep on encouraging dialogue, dialogue and more dialogue, that's all they can do. it is up the those khmer leadership to get along and work thing out among themself. the cnrp's hope for the paris peace accord's signatory countries to get involved again is very irrelevant with the election in cambodia. about the dialogue, the leaders must be willing to work things out together, if not, they will continue to have issues. from there, maybe, that tells them, cambodia is lack of proper channel to mediate such election discontent. perhaps from this, cambodia ought to look into creating a gov't panel to help mediate election discontent, if they don't already have one.

the cnrp supporters should stop using blame as their trait mark. that can cause conflict of interest and very unethical. where is the code of conduct in all of this?

Dear School of Vice,

This is more like you! And you should be like that most of the time. It's okay to be humble, but aggressive in words [ sweet, but bitter and salty at the same time ].

I don't attack anyone personally, but if his/her behavior will hurt or harm community as a whole, I will. Prevention is always better. I love justice, and love to bring justice to the world.

I could care less if Mr. Ou Virak is working somewhere else, but this person happens to be in Human Rights field, therefore, digging out about his strange reactions/behaviors is a must so less Khmers will become this man victims. Human Rights Activist is so not him.

PS: The trip was wonderful although I was a little tired. Finally I got a little sleep. I still have many videos to edit right now, many audiences are waiting anxiously to see the video. The ones I posted on KI are just raw clips on I shot on my phone only. Hopefully I will finish editing the whole thing before Sunday.

I saw you are working hard on KI. And love your song selection very much! I'm still your biggest fan! So live with it!

A SUGGESTION TO QUIET OU VIRAK:

THE OTHER CIVIL ORGANISATION GROUPS OR THE CNRP AS A MATTER OF FACT SHOULD ASK THE U.S.A GOVERNMENT TO STOP THE FINANCIAL SUPPORT TO HIS ORGANIZATION AND THE
THE RFA SHOULD ALSO STOP INTERWIEVING THIS GUY SO HE COULDN'T USE RFA TO LAUNCH HIS SUPPORT THE ILLEGITIMATE GORVERNMENT. I BELIEVE HE IS GETTING EMBOLDEN BY THE FINANCIAL AID FROM THE USA. PULL THE RUG OUT UNDER HIS FEET.

Time is not on the CNRP's side.

There is no time to wait for the answer from Hun Sen. It would be a NO from Hun Sen (no independent committee) with this kind of demonstration.

The CNRP must understand that if the CPP were able to drag this process longer and longer, the CNRP would become weaker and weaker. Time will automatically kill the CNRP.

The CNRP needs to escalate its efforts and adjust its tactic of the demonstration.

Khmer people have empowered the CNRP to the top and it is the CNRP's obligation to bring the loser CPP down.

Suggestions. After reading CNRP draft in KI, I would like to get some constructive input to that. I am not sure my idea would help or not but just a concern. Since CNRP submits thumbprints and letters, I would see that CNRP didn't make proposal to what CNRP made the cases and incidents. I am feeling if CNRP from those facts finding would propose in writing to all interested parties and a coy would address to CPP for consideration. Such proposal should include the resolution that CNRP and CPP could work altogether to that finding. My opinion, I would propose to CPP to form and independent group composed of monks and students who are not in any party or half and half of those parties to verify all the ballots and precisely recount under other independent NGO members. Such proposal must include an agreement signed by both parties to ascertain that ballot recounts will be the last process and must abide by that.
