DOUBLE VISION -- learning to see from the perspective of others

Who do you see?  A beautiful young woman, or a not-so-beautiful, old woman?

"Double Vision"

"Oppression and Justice"

(Chapter V of Exclusion and Embrace, Miroslav Volf)

"Conflicting parties need to practice what Hannah Arendt calls an 'enlarged way of thinking'"... (p. 212)

"or, as I will call it 'double vision'... we enlarge our thinking by letting the voices and perspectives of others, especially those with whom we may be in conflict, resonate within ourselves, by allowing them to help us see them, as well as ourselves, from their perspectives.  Nothing can guarantee in advance that the perspectives will ultimately merge and agreement be reached.  We may find that we must reject the perspective of the other.  Yet we should seek to see things from their perspective in the hope that competing justices may become converging justices and eventually issue in agreement." (p. 213)

"Stricken with the sense of sinfulness, should we withdraw from making judgments and working for justice? Abdication of responsibility will be tempting to those who only know how to live in a world neatly divided into territories of pure light and of utter darkness.  But no such world exists, except in the imagination of the self-righteous; the construction of such a world is itself an act of injustice.  In a world shot through with injustice, the struggle for justice must be carried on by people inescapably tainted by injustice. Hence the importance of 'double vision.' We need to see our judgments about justice and our struggle against injustice through the eyes of the other--even the manifestly 'unjust other'--and be willing to readjust our understanding of justice and repent of acts of injustice." (p. 218)

thank you for sharing this knowledge here. i felt this is what khmer students need to talk about and learn from, how to see from other people's perspective, too, especially in the case of the cnrp vs the cpp. one can't all be wrong and the same could be said to the other party. strike a balance and move on in internal politics!

THE REALITY IN KHMER POLITICS IS ABOUT YOUN DISEASE. YOUN STEAL, YOUN LIE, YOUN PLAY TRICK. THEY MAKE KHMER LOSE THE HEAD. EVEN IN CNRP THERE ARE YOUN HIDDEN IN THERE TO HAVE THE POLITICAL GAIN IN ORDER TO SERVE YOUN TO SWALLOW CAMBODIA. THEY MAKE A LOT OF PICTURE TO SHOW KHMER WORLD THAT THEY ARE "FOR" KHMER, BUT THEY ARE SIMPLY YOUN ELEMENT TO PLAY YOUN GAME. WHEN I SAY GAME, IT IS REALLY GAME. THEY EVEN PLAY GAME ON THE STREET. IF YOU FOLLOW ONE BY ONE, THEIR REAL LIFE AND MANNER SHOWN THEY DO NOT CARE ABOUT KHMER MISERY, BUT I REPEAT AGAIN MAKE PICTURE WITH POOR KHMER AND NEVER COMPLAIN ABOUT HUN SEN'S AND ITS CPP UNJUST DEED TO KHMER PEOPLE. THEY ARE VERY GOOD TO PROMOTE KHMER ROUGE TO SHOW THE WORLD THAT KHMER KILL KHMER IN ORDER TO HIDE THAT YOUN WASN'T BEHIND THE KHMER ROUGE ATROCITY. THERE ARE MANY YOUN IN ONG. THE BOTTOM LINE THOSE PEOPLE IS THE REAL YOUN DISEASE IN KHMER SOCIETY.

The picture is really Youn.In khmer politics, Youn find the way to blur your mind. When CPP surround the royal palace a few day before king Sihamoni went the first conference in the parliament for the fifth mandate of the government. This makse to question in people 's mind. 1. Is sihamoni under the thread of CPP, he is not with CPP? or 2. They surround the royal palace is to cover that Sihamoni is with CPP. in order to use royalist to control Cambodia for the long run.

THIS PICTURE MEANS ALSO ONE HAND HIT, AND AND ANOTHER HAND CARESS.

COMMUNIST HIT, BUT IN THE MEAN TIME NEGOTIATE.

let the cnrp and the cpp foolish people argue. they each say to each other: i say it's a young lady! no way, it's an old lady! it's a young lady; no, it's the old lady!shut up, i say young; no you shut up, i say old...

i say 3! i say 4! no, you stupid, i say 3! you are blind, i say 4! 3! 4!; 3! 4!... and the story goes, the cnrp and the cpp went on and on, day, night, they lost sleep over it and they became even violent with each other! so, finally, after they fight and fight, a bystanders walked by and ask, what are you people arguing over? then, they show the illustrations above to the bystander and ask: what do you see? perplexed, the bystander said, well, if you want my opinions, it's going to stink! i don't take anyone's side. i see both a young lady and the old lady, and at the bottom, i see 3 and 4. the bystander finally said to them both: i think something is wrong with your eyes, i suggest you two get your eyes checked by the eye doctor... and the moral of the story is... i let you figure it out yourself!
