It was just three years ago that Navy CMDR Michael Vannak Khem Misiewicz - a Cambodian-born "Killing Fields" survivor who fled his war-torn native land for freedom in America as the adopted son of a female U.S. Embassy worker in Phnom Penh - had his picture on front pages around the world.
The 1992 Naval Academy graduate and commanding officer of the destroyer USS Mustin was the center of attention as he was tearfully reunited after 37 years with his Cambodian family members.
The C.O.'s father and a younger sister were slaughtered by the Communist Khmer Rouge in the 1970's, but the officer's aged mother and other siblings who survived the reign of terror and were waiting at the port of Sihanoukville, when the warship paid a visit.
CHEATING AND OVERCHARGES
Former 7th Fleet deputy operations officer, based on the USS Blue Ridge at Yokosuka, Japan, Misiewicz was assigned to the Northern Command at Peterson AFB in Colorado when he was taken into custody.
Two other individuals arrested and allegedly in the middle of the fraud to overcharge U.S. warships for essential services - providing tugboats, food, fuel and fresh water - as they visited ports of call in Singapore and Thailand, are NCIS supervisor and Special Agent John Beliveau, and Leonard Francis, CEO of Glenn Defense Marine Asia Ltd.
Beliveau was cuffed in Norfolk, Va., while Francis was arrested in San Diego.
According to court documents, Misiewicz - on the captains list, no less - took bribes of expensive gifts and sexy prostitutes in exchange for "tipping off" alleged co-conspirator Francis and so-called law enforcement officer Beliveau, which ships would dock where, and whenever possible, using his influence to arrive at those locations.
The crooks preferred ports where security measures were lax. For example, when the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln tied up at Laem Chabang, Thailand in 2012, American taxpayers were over-charged by a cool $500,000.
What made the 45 year-old Misiewicz throw away the story-book, fairy-tale life that would have ended in honorable retirement and a fat pension check? Lust and greed.
All three accused face up to five years in prison if convicted of conspiracy in the port-of-call crimes.
Misiewicz's fairy-tale life has now turned into one long nightmare.

Nope, doesn't hurt me one bit. He is a Khmer-American just like myself. He is a naturalized citizen of America since the day he took oath. Each person should be individually judge, not as a whole.
