Reading ROMANS chapter 12 -- Overcoming Evil with Good

Recently (early 2013), I discovered the sermons of my college pastor online. While at Georgetown University (1991-95), I, along with 10-20 other Georgetown friends, attended Fourth Presbyterian Church, a 10-15 minute drive from campus through the manicured estates of Northwest Washington, DC to the leafy suburban neighborhood of Bethesda in Maryland.

We drank in the deep wisdom of our college director, Chuck Jacob (now a senior pastor at Knox Presbyterian in Ann Arbor, MI) and of Dr. Rob Norris on Sunday mornings (and at times, classes he taught during the week days).

When I attended, the US Vice-President Dan Quayle and his family (and security detail), my Georgetown professor former UN Ambassador Jeanne Kirkpatrick, and many other well-known names from politics, academia and media, also attended. Dr. Norris' predecessor was then-chaplain of the US Senate, Dr. Richard Halverson.

All to say, if all of these accomplished people came Sunday after Sunday and benefited from Dr. Norris' sermons, maybe we too can find intellectual as well as spiritual nourishment from these talks?

It does not take long before one is taken in by the profundity and the humor -- not to mention, the accent! -- of Dr. Norris's exposition.

ជីវិត​ថ្មី ​ស្រប​តាម ​ព្រះហឫទ័យ ​ព្រះអម្ចាស់

ហេតុ​នេះ បង​ប្អូន​អើយ, ខ្ញុំ​ សូម​ ដាស់​តឿន​ បង​ប្អូន ​ថា, ដោយ​ព្រះជាម្ចាស់​ មាន​ព្រះហឫទ័យ​ អាណិត​ អាសូរ​ បង​ប្អូន, ចូរ​ ថ្វាយ​ខ្លួន ​ទៅ​ព្រះអង្គ, ទុក​ជា​ យញ្ញបូជា ដ៏​មាន​ជីវិត, ដ៏វិសុទ្ធ, ហើយ​ ជា​ទី​គាប់​ ព្រះហឫទ័យ​ របស់​ព្រះជាម្ចាស់។  បើ​ បង​ប្អូន ​ធ្វើ​ដូច្នេះ, ទើប​ហៅ​ ថា​ គោរព​បំរើ ​ព្រះអង្គ​ តាម​របៀប​ ត្រឹម​ត្រូវ​មែន​។  មិន​ត្រូវ​ យក​តំរាប់​តាម​ និស្ស័យ​ លោកីយ៍ ​នេះ​ឡើយ, ត្រូវ​ទុក ​ឲ្យ​ព្រះជាម្ចាស់ ​កែ​ប្រែ​ ចិត្ត​គំនិត​ បង​ប្អូន ឲ្យ​ទៅ​ជា​ថ្មី​ ទាំង​ស្រុង​វិញ, ដើម្បី ​ឲ្យ​បង​ប្អូន ​ចេះ​ពិចារណា ​មើល​ថា, ព្រះជាម្ចាស់​ សព្វ​ព្រះហឫទ័យ​ នឹង​អ្វី​ខ្លះ, គឺ​ អ្វី​ ដែល​ល្អ, ដែល​គាប់ ​ព្រះហឫទ័យ​ ព្រះអង្គ,  និង​គ្រប់​លក្ខណៈ។

ខ្ញុំ​ សូម​ ជំរាប​បង​ប្អូន តាម​ព្រះ អំណោយ​ទាន ​ដែល​ព្រះជាម្ចាស់​ បាន​ប្រទាន ​មក​ខ្ញុំ​ ថា៖ ម្នាក់ៗ​ មិន​ត្រូវ​ លើក​តម្លៃ​ ខ្លួន​ឯង​ខ្ពស់ ហួស​ពី​គំនិត ​ដែល​ត្រូវ​គិត​ នោះ​ឡើយ, តែ ​ត្រូវ​គិត​ ឲ្យ​បាន​សមរម្យ​ តាម​កំរិត​ នៃ​ជំនឿ ដែល​ព្រះជាម្ចាស់ ​ប្រទាន​ ឲ្យ​ម្នាក់ៗ។  រូប​កាយ​ មនុស្ស​យើង​ មាន​សរីរាង្គ​ច្រើន, ហើយ ​សរីរាង្គ​ នីមួយៗ​ មាន​មុខងារ​ ខុសៗ​គ្នា​ យ៉ាង​ណា, យើង​ ក៏​ដូច្នោះ​ដែរ; យើង ​មាន​គ្នា​ច្រើន​ រួម​ជា​ព្រះកាយ ​តែ​មួយ​ ក្នុង​អង្គ​ ព្រះគ្រិស្ដ, ហើយ​ ម្នាក់ៗ ​ជា​សរីរាង្គ​ របស់​គ្នា ​ទៅ​វិញ​ ទៅ​មក។  យើង​ មាន​ព្រះ អំណោយ​ទាន​ ប្លែកៗ ​ពី​គ្នា, ស្រប​តាម ព្រះគុណ ​ដែល​ព្រះជាម្ចាស់​ ប្រទាន​ មក​យើង។  ប្រសិន​បើ​ បង​ប្អូន​ណា​ ទទួល ​ព្រះអំណោយ​ទាន​ ខាង​ថ្លែង ព្រះបន្ទូល, ត្រូវ​ថ្លែង ​ឲ្យ​ស្រប​ តាម​ជំនឿ; អ្នក​ណា​ ទទួល ​ព្រះអំណោយ​ទាន​ ខាង​បំរើ, ចូរ បំរើ​ទៅ; អ្នក​ណា​ ទទួល​ ព្រះអំណោយ​ទាន​ ខាង​បង្រៀន, ចូរ​ បង្រៀន​ទៅ; អ្នក​ ដែល​លើក​ ទឹក​ចិត្ត​ បង​ប្អូន, ចូរ​ លើក​ទឹក​ចិត្ត ​គេ​ទៅ; អ្នក ​ដែល​ចែក​ទ្រព្យ ​របស់​ខ្លួន, ចូរ​ ចែក ​ដោយ​ចិត្ត ​ស្មោះ​សរ; អ្នក ​ដែល​ដឹក​នាំ, ចូរ​ ដឹក​នាំ ​ដោយ​ចិត្ត​ ខ្នះខ្នែង; អ្នក ​ដែល​ចែក​ទាន ​ដល់​ជន​ក្រីក្រ, ចូរ​ ចែក ​ឲ្យ​គេ ​ដោយ​ចិត្ត​ ត្រេក​អរ។

ចូរ​ មាន​ចិត្ត​ ស្រឡាញ់ ដោយ​ឥត​លាក់ ​ពុត​ឡើយ។  ចូរ​ ស្អប់​ខ្ពើម អ្វីៗ ​ដែល​អាក្រក់, ហើយ ​ជាប់​ចិត្ត ​តែ​នឹង​ អ្វីៗ ​ដែល​ល្អ​វិញ។  ចូរ ​ស្រឡាញ់ ​រាប់​អាន​គ្នា ​ទៅ​វិញ​ ទៅ​មក, ទុក​ដូច​ជា​ បង​ប្អូន​បង្កើត។  ត្រូវ​លើក ​កិត្តិយស​គ្នា​ ទៅ​វិញ​ ទៅ​មក ​ដោយ​ចិត្ត​ គោរព។  ត្រូវ​ឧស្សាហ៍​ ខ្នះខ្នែង, កុំ​ខ្ជិល​ ច្រអូស​ឡើយ។  ត្រូវ ​បំរើ​ ព្រះអម្ចាស់ ​ដោយ​ចិត្ត ​ក្លៀវក្លា។  ចូរ​ សប្បាយ រីករាយ ដោយ​ចិត្ត​សង្ឃឹម។  ចូរ​ កាន់​ចិត្ត​អត់ធ្មត់​ ក្នុង​ពេល​ មាន​ទុក្ខ​លំបាក។  ចូរ​ ព្យាយាម​ អធិស្ឋាន។  ត្រូវ​ជួយ​ ទំនុក​បម្រុង ​ប្រជាជន​ ដ៏វិសុទ្ធ ​ដែល​ខ្វះ​ខាត, ព្រម​ទាំង ​ទទួល​ភ្ញៀវ​ ដោយ​រាក់ទាក់​ផង។

ត្រូវ​ ជូន​ពរ​ អស់​អ្នក ​ដែល​បៀតបៀន​ បង​ប្អូន; ត្រូវ​ ជូន​ពរ​គេ, កុំ​ដាក់​ បណ្ដាសា ​គេ​ឡើយ។  ចូរ​ អរ​សប្បាយ​ ជា​មួយ​អស់​អ្នក ​ដែល​អរ​សប្បាយ; ចូរ​ យំ​សោក​ ជា​មួយ​អស់​អ្នក​ ដែល​យំ​សោក។  ត្រូវ ​មាន​ចិត្ត​គំនិត​ ចុះ​សំរុង​គ្នា ​ទៅ​វិញ ​ទៅ​មក។  មិន​ត្រូវ​ មាន​គំនិត ​លើក​ខ្លួន​ឡើយ, តែ​ ត្រូវ​ចាប់​ចិត្ត​ នឹង​អ្វីៗ​ ដែល​ទន់ទាប​វិញ។  មិន​ត្រូវ​ អួត​ខ្លួន​ថា ​ជា​អ្នក​មាន​ប្រាជ្ញា​ឡើយ។

កុំ​ ប្រព្រឹត្ត​ អំពើ​អាក្រក់ ​តប​នឹង​ អំពើ​អាក្រក់។  ត្រូវ​ គិត​តែ​ ពី​ប្រព្រឹត្ត​ អំពើ​ល្អ​ នៅ​ចំពោះ​ មុខ​មនុស្ស​ ទាំង​អស់​វិញ​។  ផ្នែក​ឯ​ខាង ​បង​ប្អូន, ប្រសិន​បើ​ បង​ប្អូន ​អាច​ធ្វើ​បាន, ត្រូវ​រស់​នៅ ​ដោយ​សុខសាន្ត ​ជា​មួយ​មនុស្ស​ ទាំង​អស់​ទៅ។  បង​ប្អូន ​ជា​ទី​ស្រឡាញ់​អើយ, មិន​ត្រូវ​ សងសឹក​ ដោយ​ខ្លួន​ឯង​ឡើយ, គឺ ​ទុក​ឲ្យ​ ព្រះជាម្ចាស់ ​សំដែង ​ព្រះពិរោធ ​ចំពោះ ​គេ​វិញ, ដ្បិត ​មាន​ចែង ​ទុក​មក ​ថា៖

ព្រះអម្ចាស់​ មាន​ព្រះបន្ទូល​ ថា, «ការ​សងសឹក ស្រេច​តែ​ លើ​យើង; គឺ ​យើង ​ទេ​តើ ​ដែល​នឹង​តប ​ទៅ​គេ។»

ផ្ទុយ​ទៅ​វិញ,

«ប្រសិន​បើ​ ខ្មាំង​សត្រូវ ​របស់​អ្នក ​ឃ្លាន,

ចូរ​ យក​ម្ហូប​ អាហារ ​ឲ្យ​គេ​ បរិភោគ​ទៅ;

ប្រសិន​បើ​ គេ​ ស្រេក, ចូរ​ ឲ្យ​ទឹក​គេ​ ផឹក​ផង។

ធ្វើ​ដូច្នេះ, ប្រៀប​បី​ ដូច​ជា​ ប្រមូល ​រងើក​ភ្លើង

ទៅ​ដាក់ ​ពី​លើ​ក្បាល​ របស់​គេ។» 

មិន​ត្រូវ​ចាញ់ ​ការ​អាក្រក់​ឡើយ; គឺ​ ត្រូវ​ ឈ្នះ​ការ​អាក្រក់  ដោយ​ប្រព្រឹត្ត​ អំពើ​ល្អ​វិញ។

Romans 12

A Living Sacrifice

Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. ² Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

Humble Service in the Body of Christ

³ For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you. ⁴ For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, ⁵ so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. ⁶ We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your^[a] faith; ⁷ if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; ⁸ if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead,^[b] do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.

Love in Action

⁹ Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. ¹⁰ Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. ¹¹ Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. ¹² Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. ¹³ Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.

¹⁴ Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. ¹⁵ Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. ¹⁶ Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position.^[c] Do not be conceited.

¹⁷ Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone. ¹⁸ If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. ¹⁹ Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,”^[d] says the Lord. ²⁰ On the contrary:

“If your enemy is hungry, feed him;
    if he is thirsty, give him something to drink.
In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.”^[e]
