His Majesty Norodom Sihamoni, King of Cambodia, has sent a royal message to his compatriots on the occasion of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (Dec. 3).
In his royal message, His Majesty the King expressed his appreciation and congratulations to the Royal Government of Cambodia’s achievements in its efforts to assist the disabled people.
The rights of people with disabilities have been protected by the country’s law, well disseminated and implemented, while the discrimination against the disabled people has been reduced, and their honor and dignity have been respected and recognized, noted King Sihamoni.
It is estimated that there are approximately 200,000 people with disabilities in Cambodia, or 1.4 percent of the country’s total population.
According to the figures from the Ministry of Social Affairs, Veterans and Youth Rehabilitation, some 1,472 disabled people have been working for different ministries and government institutions, or 0.78 percent of the total civil servants.
Last year, the RGC issued a sub-decree ordering the ministries and government institutions to recruit disabled people at least 2 percent of the new staff recruitment and 1 percent for the private enterprises. By Neou
