Rainsy, CNRP Women Defend ‘Weaker Than a Woman’ Comment

By Alex Willemyns and Khuon Narim
The Cambodia Daily, Dec. 12, 2013

Opposition leader Sam Rainsy and senior female members of the CNRP on Wednesday moved to defend the statement he made during a rally in Siem Reap on Tuesday that Prime Minister Hun Sen is “weaker than a female.”

At the CNRP’s first post-election rally in the province, Mr. Rainsy taunted Mr. Hun Sen by calling on him to follow Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra’s recent decision to call an early election.

“I appeal to Prime Minister Hun Sen; I ask one thing: Mr. Hun Sen, don’t be weaker than a female,” he said, adding, “Why is Hun Sen weaker than a female?” The gibe was taken up by many of his supporters, who marched through Siem Reap sporadically shouting, “Hun Sen, weaker than a woman!”

Mu Sochua, the CNRP’s head of public affairs and a former minister of women’s affairs, denied that Mr. Rainsy’s comment was offensive to women.

“You have to put what he said in context. The full context is that Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra put the interests of her nation first and that she was willing to stand down to end a political conflict.”

Ms. Sochua said that Mr. Rainsy meant that Mr. Hun Sen ought to draw on Ms. Yingluck’s example of strength.

“What Mr. Rainsy is saying is that she is a woman. I’ve always said that when a woman leads, she thinks about the national interest. It’s the same when a woman makes decisions, she thinks about the common interest.”

“If he were to say ‘Women are weaker than men,’ I would not accept that from Mr. Sam Rainsy, but I work with him and I know he would never say that.”

CNRP lawmaker-elect Ke Sovannaroth, the head of the opposition party’s working group in Siem Reap, agreed that the comments were only intended to ask Mr. Hun Sen to emulate Ms. Yingluck’s example.

“It wasn’t offensive. He wanted to compare Prime Minister Hun Sen and Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra in terms of their bravery,” Ms. Sovannaroth said.

Mr. Rainsy also said his comment was taken out of context and that he meant to show his respect for Ms. Yingluck rather than denigrate women.

“It’s very rare to have a woman as a prime minister in this world. What I meant is that we admire Yingluck Shinawatra for her courage and dignity,” he said.

“Even though she has no legal reason to stand down—she is the legitimate prime minister, she was democratically elected, and the opposition to her is weak—she stood down.”

“She happens to be a woman. It just so happens that Hun Sen is less courageous,” Mr. Rainsy said.

deny all you want, when a leader compare other leader as weaker than female, it's a common assumption that he implies female human if weaker than her male counterpart, very common in khmer culture to look down on female human. that's why women's advocates have to fight for women's rights and protect it. of course, people will take it out of context because a leader said that? that's the difference! it's like saying gay, black, handicapped, etc! this group might not taken offensively, but other women leaders do!

and talk about stepping down, why don't sam rainsy steps down and resigns, why they want cambodia to be like thailand protest? lack of originaliy, etc? mu sochua should tell that to sam rainsy!

it shows typical lame excuse of sam rainsy and his cnrp group! i told you, cambodia don't want them by themself leading the country; they seem incompetent! maybe they think cambodia and khmer people are a joke! so they make fun!

Mr. Sam has good intention with feeling but his big mouth and immature of diplomatic and language expression skills prove him mishap of making comments. It is good that he didn't say infront of US and European audiences, perhaps some diplomats and other NGO expatriates already took a note of this comment. Otherwise, his team would be scrampled to do damage control. He should not use gender issue, why he just urge Hun Sen to follow footstep of Thailand Prime Minister and that's it. Let people learn and search if they want to know who is Thailand PM.

If anyone at all thinks that Sam Rainsy was referring to ALL women in the entire world, then they need to go back to school and learn about listening skills again. The specific topic is clear in his speech. That is Yingluck the Lady Prime Minister. Even Mu Sochu was referred to as a woman by Prime Minister Hun Sen in the court case that she lost utterly. Those who use the word implications, then they really need to back to relearning the logical reasoning process all over again. There is no implication that can logically be derived from the singular noun woman and the name Yingluck. The terms are simply facts, and that is all. Unless you want Hun Sen to twist his words on Mu Sochu all over again. Mu Sochu is actually seems arrogant and incompetent. Observer the way she speaks English in the English-language forum. Oh my god, it takes eternity for her to speak any ideas of her mind. In addition, observe her hand gestures carefully. She actually points and stuff. She is arrogant for sure. In addition, on her conversation with this American chef, she continued to highlight her CHINESE ancestors over and over. Oh my gawd.

In fact ah Kwak is stronger in term of muscle, but in term of brain power, his brain is so dull and dumb as donkey brain and on top of this his close friend has revealed that he was born with defected brain, so you cannot compare Hun Sen to the Thai Prime Minister, she is so smart and intelligent, she has made an outstanding decision to outsmart her political opponent. And ahkwak may say yes she is so smart, but she is not strong and powerful like his in term of using barbaric measures and jungle rules to intimidate the innocent and unarmed civilians. He is well known in Asia as the strongest man in term of using all barbaric means to suppress the opponents.

So, what is wrong, Mr. Hun Sen ?
Are you CHAPEST, right...?
Ms. Yingluck, Thailand people ask her to step down even though she is legitimate elected by the people, but she wants to step down for her beloved country. And Mr. Hun Sen, is not legitimate elected, but robbed the ballots from Khmer people voters... is it clear, what's Mr. Sam Rainsy meant to ?

Oh mity God, please help Cambodians to change their narrow minded into a people spirit. Please help them to find the right thins to attack each others for the sake of Cambodian nation. Just one small word, they fight to dead ? They insult and poit finger at each others. The best way for them is to find jobs for others instead. What they fight for is not right. May God calm them down and help them to learn about righteousness and justice for their society. Look at the streets where they live now, nobody pick up trash. Smelly trash pile up to the neck high. Why don't they fight for remove them away. They should unite and take lesson from Republic of Korea. Thanks God to heel their narrow mind.

We the people of Cambodia. We should think about our Cambodians not be selfish. Word doesn't fill our stomach. Work or job is our main meal menu everyday. Do we know who provide us jobs. Ourselves must find job that fits us. We can not sit down and wait to get job. Government must direct us to get to job but us we need to seek job. Let say: we own Angkor Wat. Government must stop the cars driving around inside Angkor compound. Government must set up a goal to transform that into a small rail way to connect Angkor to Banteay Srey. We the people must find way to make wagons and benches for passengers to sit and to enjoy the ride. We must provide ideas to government to built hundred of stations for visitors to stop sightseeing. We must invent bicycles and stations for them to rent to people. That way we help each others to improve. This is just a small example for us to brainstorm for Cambodians not to spend our precious time to fight just one small word. What is it for. Please stop that and go in the right direction to help Cambodians to survive and to rest in peace. Thank you.

I love Cambodia but lack of trust with Cambodians. They like to insult each others than anybody else. they can NOT unify as a big community. How can they save their country from foreign invasion. They are so rude and they like to find way to fight each others even for a small thing. They don't like to go to work rather they look into a smart big mouth to compose their fight. But good those, they respect the foreigners like their own bosses. One hundred people survey shows that Cambodians tend to lost control within politic and find way to push each others from norm. Some like to show off their challenge rather than righteousness and justice. That's interesting for them. We will see when they can get along or break down. Please go on and fight. So pity with those chicken heart.

the point is, why a leader like sam rainsy even use male vs female analogy like this? it shows he lacks political skills, let alone diplomacy, etc! and his followers? i wonder how educated they are to follow him like that! maybe he's real good at leader the uneducated group who attended his protest! the educated people after hear him, would probably want nothing to do with it!

there is something you say and something you shouldn't say. if a leader like sam rainsy can't distinguish the difference, then his leadership ability is questionable by all! this man lacks ethics!

Anonymous said...

watch out, the cnrp people will accuse women's advocate as doctoring the fact just like his group accuse the KR's victim of toul sleng as doctoring what kem sokha said about the s-21 as staging, etc! the funny thing is some gullible foreigners buy into the cnrp in the name of democracy. that's sad!

Anonymous said...

the real issue here is not that words from sam rainsy has lots of discriminatory intent to them, it is how he and his group always accuse and blame the others that makes the other to attack him back. they are so one-sided in their view, that is why it ticks people off when he said something unethical, unprofessional like this!

I like Saveoun Koy idea. You know, instead of keep doing this insanity protest thing; they should actually use the troop (protesters) to clean up the country side. Help the locals to create jobs. Government doesn't create jobs, people do. I never saw government create one bushel of rice in my life.

In the book of life it says: Overcome evil with good. I think Saveoun Koy hit on the heart of the matter. Start fixing the roads,(pot holes)if you can. Get picnic tables for Angkor Parks. I had nothing to sit on when I was there.
Build outhouses (toilets). If funds can be found start the economic wheels turning instead of waiting to be in proper position and lord over everyone else.

What Sam Rainsy said is right. Hun really is weaker than Yingluck. Let me tell you why? First Yingluck would not want to see her people fighting one another in the name of politic. She can see some demand her to leave while others accepting as she is, but in order to settle such a case, she has to make a precise decision to end such conflict once and for all. According to Sam's comment she is a very strong person who cares for people and country alot, unlike Hun Sen, he already lost the election and still claim to be the winner and still doesn't give a damn shit about, how hard people cried from inside and outside for him to step down, still, he won't, which mean he is weaker than a women.

Generally, women are weak in term of physical, emotional and social development, mainly because we are women and that is why we have human right approaches to protect women and children because they are basically vulnerable. But when Yingluck made such a decision to go to the pole again it means, she is very brave indeed and also has such a high moral, integrity and professionalism. Unlike Hun and his CPP have think skin like elephane and still manage to walk on stage until these present days without any shame at all.

He said that he is a VC's puppet, therefore, this is what they like to do to our people, to defame our country and nation at all costs, why? so that they could have it all to themselves in the end. They did this to Laos, Chompa, Khmer Krom and now the whole srok khmer and is spreading in Thailand. Their aim is to take the Southeast Asia to be under the Chinese Federation.

Anyway, it is time for all khmers both CPP and CNRP to conform, to clean up our system for good before it is too late. e.g once Hun/CPP no longer useful to them, they too be killed and be fed to the crocodiles or maybe they will continue to use their children as their slaves forever and ever until we are finished.

7:27am, if you admire yingluck too much, why don't you go live in thailand? why you choose cambodia instead? can't you respect cambodia to be different?

Anonymous said...

It is the bravery that we are talking about, and there is nothing else, no matter how people want to twist it.
Fact is fact. Politically, Hun Sen is coward but Yingluck is brave and she is happened to be a woman.
If everybody understands this much we would not have arguments.

Anonymous said...

people already know yingluck is a woman, why sam rainsy had to use gender discrimination to the crowd of uneducated followers! nobody is afraid, it is about ethical code of conduct, especially if you are a leader. i'm telling you, not only khmer people can judge for themself on this issue, the world community as well can see! so, just apology is you don't mean to say it that way and don't repeat it again in the future! and also educate your group to understand code of ethical conduct! that is, know right from wrong!

Sam Rainsy'speech has no analogy as claimed by that idiotic commenter. Here is the logic of it all. Lady Yingluck the Prime Minister of Thailand is a woman. This lady is morally stronger than the Man Hun Sen the Primer Minister of Cambodia. Say it in other words, Hun Sen is weaker than the Lady YingLuck of Thailand. End of story!

He may have the poor khmer support him for now, but many month's already pass with out any result, how long would the poor khmer will keep supporting his party? Rainsy is getting weaker and weaker by the days. I think Mucha is the better leader than Rainsy, she should push Raisy out and take the lead. I like Mucha becuase she stay tought with Hun Sen, un_like Rainsy when thing get tought he ran out country to hide. Rainsy is not strong like Mucha, so Rainsy need to step down and let Mucha take over the leadershipe roll. If Raisy think he a strong man he should do so with out hestiation.

2:17 PM, it doesn't matter if you are a private citizen. You called Khmer people dumb, and you're considering yourself better than Sam Rainsy? Do you even understand Khmer language or knows how to read between the line? Are you the kind of person only understand what he/she is reading rather than what the message is saying?

I truly believe you DO NOT understand the message but rather only understand what you were reading. Or maybe you're a whitewash or white trash. Living oversea for so long you forgot Khmer language and tradition.

Soon you will call on all Khmer to stop using the word YOUN because your white friends said so.

If a male friend of mine couldn't lift up a big screen TV by himself and I say "you are weaker than a woman". Would women around the world call on the Interpol police to arrest me?

And your excuse is "I'm a private citizen and I can say whatever I want". Reality check! Once you are online posting messages, you are no longer a private person. Just because you live in a white's world doesn't mean you are better than people living in Cambodia. You are the kind of person would like down on poor people. You need to rethink about yourself.
