3 Worldviews on the Problem of Evil (Os Guinness at The Veritas Forum)
What is evil?
3 Views on the Problem of Evil
Os Guinness | The Veritas Forum
The biggest question is problem of EVIL. Three families of faiths have very different answers.
I. The EASTERN View of Evil
The East (Hinduism, Buddhism) is very, very realistic about evil. Buddhism is religion-sized answer to suffering and affliction and evil, what the Hindu calls “dukkha” (affliction).
But the trouble in the East: there’s no solution for evil, suffering, injustice and oppression in the world that we know it. The only answer is: renounce the world, detach yourself from the world.
What fuels everything is DESIRE, which leads to cravings, which lead to attachment, which binds us to the wheel. Problem isn’t just that we die, the problem is we’re reborn. Contrary to Californian idea that reincarnation is “groovy, man, groovy” (as we used to say in the 60’s)—reincarnation, we go round and round and round—maybe, Hindus say—35,000 times.
And the only solution is freedom FROM this world, from the wheel. So, in the East, freedom is NOT freedom to be an individual; it’s freedom FROM individuality. You can see, that’s a very radical view.
Buddha, when he was enlightened in Bodh Gaya, he didn’t say, “I am liberated!” He said, “IT is liberated!” He had reached the not-self. He called his own son “Rahula” which means “fetter”, impediment or “born chained”.
In other words, his family relationship was something that was holding him back from the renunciation of the world. And nirvana, which many people quote, actually means the “great deathless lake of extinction”.
So, Buddhism is the big gigantic NO! ever delivered to human aspirations. I think it’s a very poor answer to evil, although it has a very realistic view of evil from which we need to be delivered.
II. The SECULARIST View of Evil
We live in a meaningless universe, because everything finally comes from chance. There’s no meaning to be discovered in the universe. If we want meaning, we have got to create it ourselves.
Bertrand Russell gives us the picture of Atlas carrying his own universe on his own shoulders.

A nation of liars and cheats?
Hans Christian Andersen : The Emperor's New Clothes [origin of phrase "the emperor has no clothes"]
Second and to the contrary, it is to CNRP’s advantage not to rely on the parliamentary immunity. In doing so, it clears one smokescreen to the risible, politically-motivated charges. This is where the focus is and it should be kept here, without any distraction of immunity talk. The legal case is groundless: let it stay clearly so without obfuscation of other side entanglements.
And force the authority to deal with their nakedness—the serious and laughable charges in the political theatre, in plain view for all to see and ridicule. After all, the emperor has no clothes.

Dec. 2013
Hello, dear
readers!
I am Hengsoy, Jr. Life has been busy since the passing of our father Heng Soy. (Bless his soul!)... we, his family and friends, however, are as dedicated as ever to continue his legacy of publishing sensitive information about Cambodia.
Since his passing, KI Media has been a ship without a captain [...] For the first few weeks after Heng Soy’s passing, KI Media hovered in the high 8-990,000 of hits.
10 Aug. 2013
[...]
But for the past
couple of months, the monthly figures have not passed 500,000. It is regrettable, mainly due to the
immature, self-righteous, narrow-minded new poster, Ms. Jemima, that our father
Heng Soy unfortunately trusted with access.
But let us not dwell on the recent past of bickering, hypocritical personalities but instead look forward to this amazing new opportunity.
LEAD WITH WISDOM by Dr. Mark Strom
Among the many wisdom traditions that Dr. Mark Strom draws from, one comes from the Judeo-Christian book of Proverbs:
In certain circumstances, Do not answer a fool according to his folly, or you yourself will be just like him. (Prov. 26:4)
While on other occasions, Answer a fool according to his folly, or he will be wise in his own eyes. (Prov. 26:5)
Wisdom tells us when to do what.
Vietnamization of Cambodia under Hun Sen
Theary Seng's Commentary
Here are excerpts, emphasis added, from Brother Enemy— The War after the War: A History of Indochina Since the Fall of Saigon (New York, 1986) by Nayan Chanda to give some historical context to the VOA report of 16 June 2011 Assembly Approves Triple-Country Convention
“Cambodia’s
ruling party on Thursday approved a regional convention that would set
up a joint development area between Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam, but
which opposition critics argue would cede land to Vietnam.”
3 Worldviews on the Problem of Evil (Os Guinness at The Veritas Forum)
What is evil?
3 Views on the Problem of Evil
Os Guinness | The Veritas Forum
The biggest question is problem of EVIL. Three families of faiths have very different
answers.
I.
The EASTERN
View of Evil
The East (Hinduism, Buddhism) is very, very realistic about evil. Buddhism is religion-sized answer to
suffering and affliction and evil, what the Hindu calls “dukkha” (affliction).
But the trouble in the
East: there’s no solution for evil, suffering, injustice and oppression in
the world that we know it. The only
answer is: renounce the world, detach yourself from the world.
What fuels everything is DESIRE, which leads to cravings, which lead to
attachment, which binds us to the wheel.
Problem isn’t just that we die, the problem is we’re reborn. Contrary to Californian idea that
reincarnation is “groovy, man, groovy” (as we used to say in the 60’s)—reincarnation, we go round and round and round—maybe, Hindus say—35,000
times.
And the only solution is freedom
FROM this world, from the wheel. So, in the East, freedom is NOT freedom to be an individual; it’s freedom
FROM individuality. You can see, that’s a very radical
view.
Buddha, when he was enlightened in
Bodh Gaya, he didn’t say, “I
am liberated!” He said, “IT is liberated!” He had reached the not-self.
He called his own son “Rahula” which means “fetter”, impediment or “born chained”.
In other words, his family relationship
was something that was holding him back from the renunciation of the
world. And nirvana, which many people quote, actually means the “great
deathless lake of extinction”.
So, Buddhism is the big gigantic NO!
ever delivered to human aspirations.
I think it’s a very
poor answer to evil, although it has a very realistic view of evil from
which we need to be delivered.
II.
The SECULARIST
View of Evil
We live in a
meaningless universe, because everything finally comes from chance. There’s no meaning to be discovered in the
universe. If we want meaning, we have got to create it ourselves.
Bertrand Russell
gives us the picture of Atlas carrying
his own universe on his own shoulders.

RIVETING!
Whatever your theological stance, this 4-part series of 20 minute is
informative, accessible and brilliant! And AWESOME!
BBC One-hour Presentation (in 6 parts):
THE MOST INCREDIBLE, MIND-BOGGLING, AWESOME structure of our body. It leaves one breathless.
- Each person is made of 120,000,000,000,000 (120 trillion) cells.
- Cells are the basic building block of living tissues, most fundamental unit of life (smallest unit of what makes us human).
- In EACH cell, a billion (1,000,000,000) microscopic machines all play their part.
- DNA is nucleus of cell, made of genes, containing the instructions for life.
- 6 feet (1.83 meters) of DNA in every cell of our body.
- The double helix of DNA contains over 20,000 instructions that tell our cells what to make and when, how to organize our entire bodies.
I am reminded of Psalm 139
For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful, I know that full well.
My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place,
when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.
Your eyes saw my unformed body;
all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.

Os Guinness discusses religion and pluralism
[excerpts]
Issue: (abstract-sounding but underlies so many other issues that humanity have to answer) How do we live with our big differences?
Answer: SOUL FREEDOM: freedom of thought and conscience for everyone.
To make that possible: soul freedom plus CIVILITY. To make that
practicable: PUBLIC SQUARE.
HOW DO WE LIVE WITH OUR DEEP DIFFERENCES TO A NEW LEVEL?
Are we to be content with little sound bites and limited character
tweeting, or anonymous names on blogs issued in degrading speech? Or,
are we to work out how we live in the public square globally in ways
that do justice to our humanity and the greatness of our democratic past
we may have?
Freedom
of thought and conscience protects BELIEVERS, it never protects
BELIEFS. As soon as you shift to protecting BELIEFS, you silence
debate.
The difference between RESPECT and TOLERATION: “toleration is always
better than its opposite, intolerance. But “toleration” is not the word
to defend today. It’s John Locke’s word; it has a very basic weakness.
Tolerance is condescending; it’s always the powerful tolerating the
weak; the majority tolerating the minority; the government tolerating us
citizens. No. Freedom of conscience is alienable. No govt, no
scientific discovery, nothing has the right to come between an
individual and his/her conscience. That’s respect. Tolerance is far
too weak a word. We need to persuade our liberal friends to want
something much tougher, because our human rights are at stake here.

Charter 77 "Truth prevails for those who
live in truth." Russian proverb "One word of truth outweighs the
entire world." Jesus "...and the truth will set you free."
Truth is essential for a good life, for freedom.
1. Two companion crises to the crisis of truth: (i) crisis of character (who a person is when no one sees except God), (ii) crisis of ethics (Shirley Jackson's The Lottery; "Today, it is worse to judge evil than to do evil, so confound is the ethical confusion"; Nietsche's will to power)
2. Two arguments for those who believe
in truth but have grown careless about it: "Without truth, there is only
manipulation" (Picasso); "Without truth, there is no freedom" (Isaiah
Berlin; "freedom from, freedom for")
3. Two arguments for those skeptical
about it, have no interest in it: Peter Burger "to relativize the
relativizer"; they don't apply relativism to their position; there is
clarity in consistency; any thought can be thought, any argument can be
argued; there are some thoughts that can be argued but not lived; A.J.
Ayer's Verification Principle - all claims must be verified through the 5
senses or they're non-sense; but the Verification Principle itself
could not be verified through the 5 senses, so the Principle is
nonsense. Point to the Signals of Transcendence. Atheist: "There is no
god", an absolute (not relative) position; they are not saying as a
true relativist, "There is no god for me, there may be for you."
4. Two challenges that truth to bring
to all of us: People try to shape truth to their desires; the sharper
the minder, the slipperier the heart; Aldous Huxley: "decided" (not
"discovered") the world has no meaning.
Triangle of First Principles: Freedom requires virtue, which requires faith, which requires freedom...
Basil Mitchell's Parable of the Resistance Fighter
Os Guinness
Another brilliant talk. Another equally brilliant talk on the same theme:
[Before starting his talk on Freedom, Os made remarks about the Religious / Christian Right that are worth capturing in print: (i) theological unfaithfulness, (ii) political ineffectiveness, and (iii)
cultural counter-productiveness. "The Religious Right is one of the
main factors stoking anti-religious, anti-Christian sentiment..."
"...always free, free always"
Three Tasks:
1. Winning freedom.
2. Ordering freedom.
3. Sustaining freedom - by far, the hardest.
- Yes, Constitution, but more... AND
- "Golden Triangle of Freedom": (i) Freedom requires (ii) virtue, which requires (iii) faith, and faith requires freedom.
Three Menaces to Freedom:
1. External menaces.
2. Polybius "corruption of customs" "habits of the heart"
3. Passing of time, "the injury of time" for fall of Rome.
Three Shifts from Founders:
1. Privatization of religion.
2. Rise of "proceduralism" or "legal secularism" (Rawls)
3. Rise of "post-modernism" (no truth, will to power)
Contemporary Menaces:
1. Alienation of leaders.
2. Breakdown of transmission of American virtues
e.g. public education (custodians of handing down American virtues), immigration (citizenship education)
3. Corruption of customs.

John Lennox - "A Matter of Gravity: God, the Universe and Stephen Hawking" [a very educational talk, with TRANSCRIPT]
Nonsense remains nonsense even when taught by world-class physicists. What serves to obscure the illogicality of such statements is the fact that they are made by famous scientists. And the general public not surprisingly assumes that they are statements of science and take them on authority.
Dr. John Lennox (3 Ph.Ds) Professor of Mathematics at Oxford, speaking at Cape Town University
Hawking, the world’s most famous living scientist. Symbol of fortitude having suffered motor neuron disease over 40 years. Electronic voice synthesizer. Book / research deals with origin of universe.
His book A Brief History of Time, showed reticence: “If physicists were to find a theory of everything, that is a theory that unifies the four fundamentals of nature, we would know the mind of God.“
Stephen Hawking’s latest book The Grand Design, his reticence has completely disappeared: He challenges the divine creation of the universe. “Now, it is the law of physics, and not the will of God, that provide the real explanation as to how the universe came to being. The Big Bang is the inevitable consequence of those laws. Because there is a law such as gravity, the universe can and will create itself from nothing.” Denies Grand Designer.
Hawking’s grand conclusion: Spontaneous creation is the reason there is something rather than nothing, why the universe exists, why we exist. It is not necessary to invoke God to light the blue-touch paper and set the universe going.”
Headline news. Hawking and Richard Dawkins, the vanguard of the New Atheism.
A grandiose claim to banish God. After the majority of great scientists in the past have believe in Him, and many still do: Galileo, Kepler, Newton, Maxwell.
The very fact that there are leading scientists who believe in God, and leading scientists who do not, shows us the simplest notion that science is somehow at war with belief in God is FALSE.
There is a conflict, but it lies much deeper in: a conflict of WORLDVIEWS (from time immemorial): The Naturalist worldview (the cosmos is all that exists, everything is reduced to mass and energy) vs. the Theistic worldview (cosmos is created, there is a God who created it and maintains it). Even today, those worldviews colliding in the academy.
Issue is not with Hawking’s science but what he claims to deduce from it. The Grand Design opens with big questions: How do we understand the world in which we find ourselves? How does the universe behave? Did the universe need a creator?
In his very next words, Hawking dismisses philosophy. The above “questions are for philosophy. But philosophy is dead. It has not kept up with modern development of science, particularly in physics. As a result, scientists have become the bearers of the torch of discovery in our quest for knowledge.”
Hawking’s statement about philosophy is itself a philosophical statement. It is not a statement of science; it’s a metaphysical statement about science. Therefore because he claims philosophy is dead, he contradicts himself.
Furthermore, the statement that scientists have become the bearer of the torch of discovery smacks of SCIENTISM, the very widespread view that science is the only way to truth. That is manifestly false. If true, then must closed down all social sciences departments.
Venerable Chuon Nath with King Norodom Sihanouk
ឲ្យ v. អោយ
I have seen immense progress over the past few years since I've raised the issue of the prevailing incorrect spelling of ឲ្យ as អោយ. However, the matter is not settled as the continuing incorrect spelling is still made.
In all instances of my editing and punctuating of the Khmer Bible (59 of the 66 books), I have changed to the correct spelling of ឲ្យ (from អោយ, which is incorrect).
Samdech Sangh (Venerable) Chuon Nath Dictionary (1967) and another dictionary before 1977 have ឲ្យ. Dictionaries of 2004, 2007 have ឱ្យ.
ឱ្យ is an accepted form of ឲ្យ. However, the introduction page of Samdech Sangh Chuon Nath dictionary (1967-1968) edition - note No. ខ៣, he also indicated that while this form is correct, we should not use: ឱយ or អោយ.
Writing អោយ (which is INCORRECT) is akin to texting in English luv . It
is common practice to write informally text or email messages "I luv
you" but it doesn't make "luv" the correct spelling of "love". The
principle also applies to writing Khmer properly.

សូម v. សុំ
In general you use
សុំ (a verb)
for asking, begging.
In this case, សុំ as a verb is
followed by a noun/object.
You use
សូម as part of a verb phrase,
still expressing a need, preceding the main action
(that is to say,
followed by the action verb),
often used to make the phrase more polite.
I encounter the incorrect or inconsistent use of these words
សូម and សុំ
all the time, including all the popular main Khmer print media as well as in the books of the Bible, mainly the Gospel of John.

Cambodia's Leadership Crisis (commentary by Ms. Theary C. Seng)
Seen and heard on Ms. Theary C. Seng's Facebook accounts:
www.facebook.com/theary.c.seng
[I've stated earlier that the problem with Cambodia has always been the extreme limitations of its leaders AND the people who are too easily pleased with cheap laughs produced by "the everyman" Cambodian leader, with enough truth for us to pause in the saying that we Cambodians deserve the leaders we have. For me, Sam Rainsy and his wife Saumura currently are the only leaders with the INTELLECTUAL VERSATILITY and broad and deep POLITICAL ACUMEN AND CREATIVITY to lead...]
Sam Rainsy: With regard to internal politics, more precisely the strengthening of democracy and the defense of human rights, we will continue to seek the support of America because we share the same values.
But in international relations, ideology has become secondary, even irrelevant, at a time when national and strategic interests are the determining factors in choosing friends and allies. Look at the evolving relations between Vietnam and the US: the two former enemies – one communist, the other one capitalist – have become good friends and allies.
And when it comes to ensuring the survival of Cambodia as an independent nation, there is a saying as old as the world: the enemy of my enemy is my friend.

Cambodia’s Eight-month Political Deadlock Shows Hints Of Ending
Poverty Is a Moral Problem
I think Bill Gates is the poster child for the technocratic illusion—that alleviating poverty is purely a technical matter. That there is just a long list of technical solutions to finance. The illusion is that you are paying no attention to who is actually implementing these technical solutions and that there are no politics or moral choices involved in who is actually doing the implementing.

10 Aug. 2013

But for the past
couple of months, the monthly figures have not passed 500,000. It is regrettable, mainly due to the
immature, self-righteous, narrow-minded new poster, Ms. Jemima, that our father

Hello, dear

In certain circumstances, Do not answer a fool according to his folly, or you yourself will be just like him. (Prov. 26:4)
While on other occasions, Answer a fool according to his folly, or he will be wise in his own eyes. (Prov. 26:5)
