On 06 Feb, at 4 PM, while she was enjoying the sun on the beach in O’Chhoeuteal, a resort in Preah Sihanouk province, an Austrian tourist was threatened for money by unknown people. According to the Kampuchea Thmei newspaper, Maria Eberhard, the 70-year tourist who was staying at a usually quiet guesthouse nearby, was assaulted.
On the spot of the incident, the police found a piece of rock used to threaten the victim who was seriously injured on the head. She is currently being hospitalized at the Calmette Hospital in Phnom Penh where she is now in coma. Local police officers are engaged to find the culprits as soon as possible. Regarding this affair, some tourists and local people have deplored the lack of responsibility from the local authority and the Preah Sihanouk police force to provide protection to foreigners there.
