Another Cambodian maid died in Malaysia last week, and starvation by her employers is the likely cause, Malaysian police said yesterday.

Speaking to the Post by phone, Penang state police chief deputy commissioner Datuk Wira Ayub Yaakob said 24-year-old domestic worker Mey Sichan’s employer had called for an ambulance in the early hours of March 31, but she was already dead when it arrived.

A post-mortem of the body found irregularities with Mey Sichan’s gastric glands, suggesting that starvation was one reason why she passed away, he said.

There had also been injuries on her body, leading police to believe she had been physically abused, added the police chief.

Homicide detectives are probing the suspicious death of a Cambodian woman whose body was found yesterday in an apartment suite downtown.

A relative of the deceased 40-year-old woman called police asking them to check on her welfare at about 5 p.m., Det. Bill Clark said this morning outside the building.

When police got to The Kent apartment building at 10955 106 St. they found a “man who was acting a little delusional.”

He was taken into custody and police found the dead woman in the bedroom.

The man, who is in his late 30s or early 40s, wasn’t acting rationally when police arrested him.

“We’re not doctors by any means, but he didn’t appear to be in the proper state of mind,” Clark said.

“At this time we do not know the cause of death,” he added.

“Homicide detectives are treating it as suspicious. Until we know the cause of death we won’t be able to say if it’s a homicide or not.”

The husband remained in police custody as investigators attempted to interview him.

“Of course we’re having some language problems that we’re dealing with too.”

Police were desperately searching for a translator last night.

“We are checking with the RCMP and other agencies right now to see what we can find,” Clark said.

Until police know more about how the woman died, investigators are conducting a basic investigation.

For several hours, the forensic unit gathered evidence from the suite where the grisly find was made.

Several neighbours were interviewed by police last night.

Clark didn’t say what they’ve found out from the neighbours, but confirmed the man and the woman lived together in the suite and that they were husband and wife.

It wasn't immediately known how long the woman had been dead.

Edmonton police question [Cambodian] husband in suspicious death

Body of 40-year-old woman found in apartment

Edmonton police are investigating what they describe as the suspicious death of a woman found in the bedroom of her apartment just north of downtown late Wednesday afternoon.

The woman's husband is in police custody for questioning and police were awaiting the results of an autopsy on Thursday.

On a tip from the provincial mental health crisis team, police showed up at the three-floor walk-up Wednesday at 5 p.m. They asked to be let into a first-floor apartment occupied since 2000 by a Cambodian couple.

Landlord Allan Thompson unlocked the door, but said Thursday that police had to force their way into the apartment.

"There was some barricading to the main door of the suite," he said.

Det. Bill Clark told reporters that police went to the apartment to check on the welfare of the occupants.

“We went inside and found a male who was acting a little delusional,” he said.

Clarke said they found the body of a woman in the bedroom and took the man into custody.

Police said they are treating the woman's death as a homicide.
