NORODOM ARUNRASMY
FUNCINPEC PARTY
28 July 2008

Now that the election is over and that the people of Cambodia have spoken out, I wish to express my sincere appreciation to all party members, from the leadership to the grassroots, for their exemplary work before and during the campaign.

It was a tremendous privilege for my husband and I to be able to visit the provinces of Cambodia and to exchange views with so many compatriots, both supporters and non-supporters of FUNCINPEC, and to hear about their hopes and aspirations for their future.

During these meetings, I learned much about our people’s wishes to live in peace, with full respect for human rights, rule of law, free of corruption, and prosperity for all not just a few. I also learned that our people wanted change but it seems, from the outcome of the election, that our people’s wishes were not respected and that pressure was too strong and their desire for change was suppressed.

As Winston Churchill used to say “a country without a conscience is a country without a soul, and a country without a soul is a country that cannot survive”. Because of my love for my homeland, I earnestly hope that this is not the case for Cambodia.

When I accepted to lead the FUNCINPEC Party to the election, it was with a sense of duty, honour and dignity. Above all, it was with a sense of gratitude to our King Father, His Majesty Samdech Preah NORODOM SIHANOUK, founder of FUNCINPEC and Father of modern independent Cambodia. Yet, during the electoral campaign, I was not even allowed to mention that our King Father had established FUNCINPEC against all odds and that he had struggled for over ten years until peace, independence and freedom were given back to Cambodia and her people.

I owe my deepest gratitude to my Royal Father that Cambodia can today enjoy peace and stability, and I am sad that His Majesty’s noble efforts are, under this crucial and sensitive circumstance, not genuinely recognized and, consequently, we are not allowed to mention them when we talk to our people, whose love and affection for His Majesty remain undiminished.

During the past months, I worked hard to restore the tarnished image of FUNCINPEC to what it used to be, the symbol of past peaceful and prosperous years. I am profoundly disappointed that people have worked hard to discredit me before even giving me the chance to prove myself as a hard working and conscientious woman.

FUNCINPEC has also loyally contributed to the peace and stability of the country. Instead, we have been accused of selling out, of being puppets, etc… If we had acted or behaved in a different way, peace and stability would have been broken and the election may not even have taken place.

I am convinced that deep inside their heart, the people of Cambodia know that I have tried hard but that there are powers at work that are stronger than our humble intentions and efforts to help the people of this beautiful country of ours.

I wish everybody much happiness, good health and well-being and I thank you again for your support.

The youngest daughter of former monarch Norodom Sihanouk, who was nominated by the Funcinpec party as its candidate for premiership during the upcoming 2008 general election, said that she will assist in pulling up Funcinpec, and in particular, in supporting the value of women.

Princess Norodom Arunrasmy told RFA that she does not want to be involved in politics because of the ever changing political situation, however, because the decision has already been taken by the Funcinpec party congress, the princess must forced herself to accomplish the work in order to obtain victory.

In the past election, the Funcinpec candidate to the premiership was Prince Norodom Ranariddh. The prince is currently in exile outside the country because the Cambodian tribunal had sentenced him in absentia to 18-month of jail sentence and a fine of $150,000, after he was sued by Funcinpec officials regarding the sale of the party headquarters.

Nouv Sovathero, Funcinpec spokesman, indicated that the permanent committee of the Funcinpec party has decided to choose Princess Arunrasmy as Funcinpec candidate for prime minister. Nouv Sovathero said that the princess candidacy will be presented to the decision of the national advisory council on 18 October (tomorrow). Nouv Sovathero explained that the selection of the princess as PM candidate was due to the fact that the party leadership believes in promoting women, and the princess will perform women’s job better. Nouv Sovathera said that this is a first in Cambodia, and Funcinpec is the party which took the initiative. Nouv Sovathero sent a letter to the NRP saying that Funcinpec will stop political dealing with the princess’ brother, Prince Norodom Ranariddh. He added that Prince Ranariddh will no longer have a chance to become a PM candidate for Funcinpec.

Desperate F'pec: We have no love for you ... but we still love to have you as our PM candidate

Funcinpec may name Ranariddh as Cambodian PM candidate

With Funcinpec's party congress just days away, the party is still considering putting forward its ousted leader Prince Norodom Ranariddh, as its candidate for prime minister in 2008, local media reported Tuesday.

Over 2,600 party representatives are set to come to Phnom Penh Thursday for the congress, marking exactly one year since the congress ousted Prince Ranariddh from Funcinpec's presidency, the Cambodia Daily newspaper said.

The party's 13-person permanent committee has been considering since last week to decide on one candidate for the premiership, Ok Socheat, an adviser to Funcinpec's current president Keo Puth Rasmey, was quoted as saying.

According to Ok Socheat, Ranariddh is still on Funcinpec's shortlist of candidates, which also includes lawmakers Prince Norodom Sirivudh and Princess Norodom Vacheara, as well as Princess Norodom Arunrasmy, who is ambassador to Malaysia and Keo Puth Rasmey's wife.

The selected candidate will then be voted on by the representatives at Thursday's congress, the newspaper said.

Funcinpec party was established by retired King Norodom Sihanouk in 1981. In the 1990s, it started co-ruling the kingdom together with the Cambodian People's Party.

Earlier this year, Ranariddh, son of Sihanouk, was sentenced to18 months in jail in absentia by the Phnom Penh Municipal Court over corruption charges filed by Funcinpec. Before the verdict was made, the prince left Cambodia and has stayed overseas ever since.

With the approaching general election planned for July 2008, the Funcinpec party will elect in two weeks its candidate for the position of prime minister.

Princess Norodom Arunrasmy, Princess Norodom Vacheara, or Prince Norodom Sirivudh … of these three candidates, which one will be elected? The answer will be known on 18 October, during the vote planned at the congress of the party national council. “The candidate to the position of prime minister will be issued from the Norodom family. A man or a woman, we don’t know yet. But this person should be popular and should be a good coordinator with the partner party (CPP),” Nov Sovathero, Funcinpec spokesman, revealed on Tuesday. “Time changes, the party president is no longer necessarily the candidate to position of prime minister, unlike during the era of Norodom Ranariddh,” Ok Socheat, Keo Puth Reaksmey’s advisor, claimed. Keo Puth Reaksmey is the husband of Norodom Arunrasmy, one the three candidates. Long negotiations are under way as Prince Sisowath Thomico is currently meeting with Princess Norodom Vacheara and Prince Norodom Sirivuth, her brother, in France, where the pair are resting.
