Dutch prosecutors demand 2.5 years in prison for child sex tourist

17 June 2011

AMSTERDAM (BNO NEWS) -- Dutch prosecutors are demanding a prison sentence of more than two years for a tourist who collected child pornography for most of his life, and who frequently travels to Cambodia where he allegedly produced child pornography.

The 66-year-old man, whose identity was not released, was arrested at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport on February 3, 2010, upon his return from Bangkok, the Thai capital. His suitcase was found to contain child pornography.

Dutch police discovered more child pornography when they searched the suspect's home. In total, prosecutors said a total of 3,700 images and 293 movies of child pornography were discovered. They were collected between 1965 and February 2010.

Sam Rainsy in The Netherlands and Belgium

10 June 2011

SAM RAINSY IN THE NETHERLANDS AND BELGIUM

Just after completing a three-week tour of the USA and Canada, opposition leader Sam Rainsy is currently in The Netherlands where he is meeting with Dutch government officials, Members of Parliament and NGOs. He is also being welcomed by the Cambodian community in The Netherlands who have come to greet him in The Hague and surrounding cities.

On 11-13 June, Sam Rainsy will spend a day and a half in Brussels where a reception in his honor will be hosted by the Cambodian community in Belgium. He will also meet with MEP Cecilia Wikstrom who, on behalf of many of her colleagues at the European Parliament, has asked for his return to Cambodia to take part in the preparations for the next elections in 2012 and 2013.

The message has been sent to the current Phnom Penh government that without the participation of the opposition leader representing Cambodia’s (by far) second largest political party, the forthcoming elections will not be considered as fair and legitimate by the international community, and any government stemming from such elections would therefore be viewed as illegitimate and not truly representing the free will of Cambodian people.

HOLLAND -- A martial-arts instructor tried to hire an undercover police officer to kill his former girlfriend, police said in court documents obtained this afternoon.

Eang Ung, 42, of Holland, owner of Ung's Martial Arts, allegedly paid a partial sum for the killing -- and wanted her body gone, records showed.

"There was also discussion that Ung would pay additional to have the dead body of his girlfriend, Linda (Siripanya), hidden so that it would never be discovered," Holland police Capt. Matt Messer said in swearing out the arrest warrant.

Ung was arraigned Thursday afternoon in Holland District Court charged with solicitation of murder, a potential life offense. Judge Susan Jonas set bond at $100,000.

Ung's attorney asked for a low bond because Ung is considered a respected businessman in the community.

Police said in court records that Ung talked to a confidential informant on July 8 wanting to get rid of his ex-girlfriend, who had a child with Ung.

The two had been involved in a legal battle over child custody and support since 2003. Both also tried to obtain personal-protection orders against each others over the years.

The informant introduced Ung to the undercover police officer on Tuesday, and Ung paid an undisclosed amount of cash as a down payment, records showed. Ung and the officer met again Wednesday, at which time Ung was arrested.

The Cambodia-born Ung, a master instructor, was profiled by The Press earlier this month for his work teaching children with autism, ADHD and other challenges, including abuse. His business is on North River Avenue.

On his Web site, Ung described himself as "owner of one of the most successful martial arts schools in the West Michigan area."

Khieu Kanharith: Donor countries may not believe the GW report, even if they still continue to provide funding to Global Witness

Dutch government continues to provide funding to Global Witness

The Dutch government continues to provide funding to Global Witness, the environmental protection organization.

An official from the Dutch embassy in Bangkok, Thailand, told The Cambodia Daily that the Dutch government values Global Witness work in its observation and protection of the environment in the world, and that it will continue to provide funding to Global Witness so that it can pursue its work.

The Dutch government’s decision took place after the Cambodian ambassador in London, England, issued a statement on 4 June requesting that all donor countries stop providing funds to Global Witness, because Cambodian officials accused Global Witness for issuing a defamation report about illegal logging in Cambodia involving the families and close business associates of prime minister Hun Sen.

Nevertheless, the Dutch government will not revisit its decision to continue funding Global Witness.

Regarding this type of funding for Global Witness, Khieu Kanharith, government spokesman, said on Wednesday that donor countries may not believe the Global Witness report published at the beginning of June, even though they continue to provide this type of aid (to Global Witness), and he also said that the government of Cambodia is not an enemy of the entire Global Witness organization.
