Speech days are usually tedious affairs at which visiting politicians spout platitudes to dozing students. You might try asking the Prime Minister of Cambodia, Hun Sen, to yours. Last week he decided to enliven a graduation ceremony in Pnomh Penh by launching an attack on his 19-year-old daughter for being a lesbian. "I can educate people in the whole country, but I cannot educate my adopted daughter," he said. "We sent her to study in the US, but she did a bad job. She returned home and took a wife ... Now I will ask the court to disown her from my family."
Despite this Hun Sen asked Cambodia's 13 million people to be more tolerant of homosexuals. "I urge parents of gays not to discriminate against them, and do not call them transvestites," he said.
