In a declaration date 24 June and published on Wednesday 25 June, Hun Sen calls on the authorities involved to follow his orders between the launching of the election campaign – scheduled for 26 June – and the date for the announcement of the final election results.
First of all, Hun Sen reminded to the authorities – police force, commune councils and village chiefs – to their obligation of “independence and neutrality” in their work duty during this period. Furthermore, Hun Sen called on the police force to collaborate with the various election committees “to insure security and public order,” and to take measure necessary to “prevent all actions that could lead to social instability” and affect the good progress of the election.
Hun Sen invited all members of the civil society, NGO representatives, local and international election observers, as well as Cambodians to inform the authorities about any delinquencies and other irregular actions that “could poison the election atmosphere” and that could bring doubts to the ballot results.
Addressing the parties participating in the election, he said that he is expecting them to deliver a battle “with dignity and honor” and “with honesty”, and that they will abide by the principles of “liberal democracy in a state with a rule of law.” “Political parties will have to accept the (election) results which will reflect the will of the citizen-voters,” Hun Sen warned while calling for a peaceful solution to problems that may arise.
