Hun Sen's son to manage land dispute

Prime Minister Hun Sen’s June order that land be cut from economic land concessions and returned to displaced villagers – a move that has alternately inspired gratitude and scepticism – now has a high-profile public face: one of his sons.

Hun Manith, deputy chief of Hun Sen’s cabinet and his third-oldest child, was appointed deputy secretary-general of the National General Secretariat for Land Disputes, according to an entry in the Royal Book released on June 15.

The appointment makes Manith second-in-command of the agency, which was tasked by the premier with measuring and granting land to people displaced by land disputes.

Sam Rainsy Party spokesman Yim Sovann yesterday expressed hope that Manith would help displaced villagers, but added that a lot of young Cambodians had the experience and ability to hold such positions, and lamented the fact that such opportunities in Cambodia were in the hands of one individual.

Hun To: All talk no action ... just like Uncle Hoon!!!

Nephew of Cambodia's PM planning legal action

18 June 2012
ABC Radio Australia

The nephew of Cambodia's Prime Minister has denied all allegations that he is involved in a heroin trafficking and money laundering syndicate targeting Australia.

Hun To has told Radio Australia's Khmer Service that he has engaged a lawyer to take legal action against the publisher of The Age newspaper for allegations it published earlier this year.

The Melbourne-based newspaper reported in March that the plan to arrest Hun To in Australia was thwarted because his application for a visa was denied by the Australian embassy in Phnom Penh.

Hun To says he is now in Australia to clear his name.

He says if he has done anything wrong, he wouldn't have been granted a visa to travel to Australia.

Prime Minister Hun Sen said yesterday that his father, Hun Neang, whose health took a turn for the worse in February, is being kept alive via assistance from feeding and oxygen tubes.

Speaking at the inauguration of national road 68, which runs 117 kilometres from Siem Reap province’s Kralanh district to Oddor Meanchey province, Hun Sen said this was the first time he had felt comfortable enough to leave the capital since his father’s health worsened.

Hun Neang, 91, was admitted to the hospital in Singapore late last year for medical treatment, but his condition deteriorated after returning to Cambodia.

“A month ago, we were completely hopeless, and we had already prepared everything [for his death],” Hun Sen said, adding that due to his father’s health situation, he had cancelled a trip to the provinces.

Hun To complaint seeks ‘clarification’ [-Come on, Hun To, travel to Australia to sue The Age!!!]

A spokesman for The Age said yesterday that the newspaper stands by the veracity of its story.
Prime Minister Hun Sen’s nephew Hun To said yesterday that he has filed a complaint with the Australian Embassy in Phnom Penh against Australian newspaper The Age after it named him in connection with a drug-trafficking and money-laundering racket.

The complaint to the embassy follows a similar complaint filed by Hun To’s lawyers on Monday with the Ministry of Interior.

“This complaint is to ask the paper for clarification and to show the proof to me. If they don’t, I will seek a lawyer and file a lawsuit,” Hun To told the Post yesterday.

On Monday, the Australian daily reported that Hun To had been targeted by Australian police investigating a massive heroin drug-trafficking scheme between Cambodia and Australia in the early 2000s, funnelling the funds through a Melbourne casino.

“You think that if I am involved with drugs I would be able to stay [free] in Cambodia?” (Doh! or Toh!) - Hun To
The nephew of Cambodia’s prime minister Hun Sen on Tuesday denied reports that he is a suspect in police investigations into illegal drug running and money laundering activities in Australia.

On Monday, Australian newspaper The Age published a report which named Hun To as the target of an inquiry into a crime syndicate police said was importing more than 1 billion Australian dollars (U.S. $1.05 billion) into the country annually, with connections to government and policing officials across Asia.

If you want to know the truth, please talk to the Australian embassy [in Phnom Penh] because they know the details,” Hun To told RFA in an interview.

He also denied that the Australian embassy had refused him a visa.

“If the Australian embassy had denied my visa, how would I be able to travel back and forth between Australia and Cambodia? To date, I am going in and out, and no one has stopped me,” he said.

Hun Sen Nephew Denies Australian Report of Drug Trafficking [Deny! Deny! Deny!: Hun To]

Heng Reaksmey, VOA Khmer | Phnom Penh
“The Age accused me of involvement with heroin, but do they have proof?”
Hun To, an influential nephew of Prime Minister Hun Sen, has denied a media report in Australia that he is wanted there for drug trafficking and other crimes.

The Age, an Australian newspaper, reported Monday that Australian police suspect Hun To of “heroin trafficking and money laundering” with a crime syndicate there.

Hun To was the target of an inquiry between 2002 and 2004, the Age reported. “But a plan to arrest and question Hun To in Melbourne was thwarted because his application for a visa was denied by Australian embassy officials in Phnom Penh, with one official citing the need to avoid a diplomatic incident,” the Age said.

Hun To is the son of Hun Sen’s brother, Hun Neng, the governor of Kampong Cham province.
