Cambodia calls for global cooperation vs. illicit arms trade

Friday, December 14, 2007

PHNOM PENH (Xinhua): The whole world must work together to implement international instruments, conventions, laws or other related measures to combat illicit trade of small arms and light weapons, Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister Sar Kheng said Thursday.

Sar Kheng, who is also the Interior Minister, made the call when addressing the opening ceremony of the 14th Asean (the Association of Southeast Asian Nations) Regional Forum on Management and Security of Stockpiles of Small Arms and Light Weapons including their Ammunitions, which is being held on Thursday and Friday in Phnom Penh.

The forum aims at exploring solution and cooperation not only for Asean but the world, Sar Kheng said.

Sar Kheng also raised some principles on small arms control, which are based on experiences Cambodia has gained.

At regional level, he said, the related countries should establish a coordinating network at the regional or sub-regional level to be a liaising institution for the implementation of activities.
