FM: Cambodia, India to strengthen defense, anti-terrorism co-op

PHNOM PENH, Oct. 25 (Xinhua) -- Cambodian Foreign Minister Hor Namhong said on Sunday that India and Cambodia will strengthen the cooperation on the fields of national defense and anti-terrorism between the two countries.

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen and his Indian counterpart, Manmohan Singh, held bilateral talks on a sideline of ASEAN summit in Thailand and their talks focused on working together to strengthen the defense and anti-terrorism cooperation between the two countries, Hor told reporters at a press conference at Phnom Penh airport after Cambodian delegation arrived from ASEAN Summit in Thailand.

India agreed to provide 15 million U.S. dollars concessional loan for building electricity power networks from Kratie and Steung Treng provinces in Cambodia, Hor added.

Moreover, Hor Namhong said that Indian Prime Minister will visit Cambodia in an appropriate time at the invitation of Hun Sen. Hun Sen, at the same, also requested the Indian side to help restore and maintain other Cambodian temples because Indian side used to assist Cambodia in the past, Hor said.

Prime minister Hun Sen returned from his official visit to India, in the evening of 10 December, after staying in India for 4 days, from 07 to 10 December 2007. During a press conference at the Phnom Penh International Airport, vice-prime minister and minister of Foreign Affairs Hor Nam Hong said that the visit brought a number of benefits to the country, just like previous visits. Hor Nam Hong said that this is Hun Sen’s 7th visit to India since 1982. He also said that there were 7 agreements signed during the visit, and India extended a line of credit of $35.2 million to Cambodia to build the Stung Krasal dam, to install electric lines between Stung Treng and Kratie provinces, and to buy water pumps.

Exim Bank [of India] extends $35.2 mn credit to Cambodia

MUMBAI: Export-Import Bank of India (EXIM) said it has extended a USD 35.2-million Line of Credit (LoC) to the Government of Cambodia for financing some of the latter's infrastructure projects.

The fund will be utilised to finance the Stung Tasal Development Project, purchase of the water pumps and for the construction of the electric transmission line between Kratie and Stung Treng Province in Cambodia, an Exim release said here.

Under the agreement, Exim Bank bank will reimburse 100 per cent contract value to the Indian exporter, upfront upon the shipment of goods, the bank said.

The pact was signed between Secretary of state, Ministry of Economy and Finance, Cambodia, Aun Porn Moniroth and Exim Bank's Chairman and Managing Director T C Venkat Subramanian.

With this, Exim Bank now has 85 LoCs in place, covering over 80 countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America and Europe, with credit commitments amounting to USD 2.8 billion.

India plans to loan Cambodia for rural infrastructure development

India plans to provide 35.2 million U.S. dollars of loan for Cambodia to develop rural infrastructure, local media reported Monday.

Hor Namhong, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, made the remark to Cambodian daily newspaper the Koh Sontepheap, after wrapping up a recent visit to India.

The loan will be mainly used to build water dam, irrigation system, and electricity network from Kratie province to Stung Treng province, he said.

The rest of the loan will be spent for buying water pumps for helping rice farmers during drought season, the paper quoted him as saying.

Prime Minister Hun Sen also plans to pay an official visit to India at the invitation of the Indian side, he added.

Hor Namhong paid his official visit to India from May 17 to 19 and met with its finance minister, foreign minister and prime minister.

Agriculture, together with garment production and tourism, are the economic pillars of Cambodia.
