A district governor from the province of Ratanakiri drowned and died on Sunday while trying to save his two children when their boat capsized. The Cambodia Daily reported that Khlok Son, the about 40-year old Lumphat district governor, drowned at around 5:00 PM on Sunday because he was trying to save his two children who were drowning in the Sre Pok river in Lumphat. The report indicated that the boat taken by the governor’s family during a fishing trip hit a rock and started to sink. Khlok Son went in to help his 2 children aged 12 and 13-year-old. After saving them and bringing them to shore, he went in the water again to try to get his sinking boat back, but he drowned and died most likely from exhaustion. The body of Khlok Son was found floating on Monday morning. Khlok Son is the Lumphat district governor from the Funcinpec quota since 2002, however, he defected Funcinpec and joined the CPP shortly before the April commune election. He is survived by his wife and 7 children.
