Cambodia's genocide tribunal says a bail hearing for jailed Khmer Rouge prison chief, Duch, will be open to spectators.

Duch, who was the first Khmer Rouge cadre to be detained by the UN-backed court, is likely to appear before tribunal judges in late November.

A tribunal spokesman says a capacity crowd is expected at the 500-seat trial chamber, because it will be the first glimpse most Cambodians have ever had of Duch.

He is being charged with crimes against humanity, and is alleged to have overseen the torture and executions of 16,000 people, including children, as head of the regime's notorious Tuol Sleng prison.

Only one other former Khmer Rouge leader, regime ideologue Nuon Chea, is in the court's custody.
