TAY NINH — The remains of 112 volunteer soldiers who died in Cambodia were reburied yesterday in Tan Bien District's Martyrs' Cemetery in the southern border province of Tay Ninh. 

The remains were located and collected by two teams from the Military Zone 7 High Command, the Tay Ninh provincial Military High Command, K70 and K71, from Cambodia's Siem Reap, Battdombong, Kongpongcham and Pailin provinces. The teams worked during the dry season from November 2010 to July 2011.

With the support of the Cambodian Royal Army, the authorities and local people, the K70 and K71 teams have so far located, exhumed and repatriated 2,546 sets of remains of Vietnamese martyrs.

Cambodia on Tuesday repatriated the remains of 11 Vietnamese volunteer soldiers who died during the war against the Khmer Rouge regime.

It was the last repatriation under an agreement signed between the Vietnamese and Cambodian governments to search for the remains of Vietnamese volunteer soldiers and military experts between 2003 and 2011.

So far the remains of 240 soldiers have been found and sent back to Vietnam.

Servicemen from Military Zone 7 in the south have repatriated 5,588 sets of remains of Vietnamese war combatants in Cambodia since they began in 2001.

A conference in Ho Chi Minh City Friday to review the search and repatriation operation reported that only 340 of the sets had been identified.

According to Military Zone 7, there has been seven search phases in 10 cities and provinces so far.

During the seventh phase in the 2007-08 dry season, search teams found 403 sets of remains from six provinces in Cambodia which were returned to Vietnam and buried in martyrs’ cemeteries in Tay Ninh, Binh Phuoc and Long An provinces.

The search will continue in the 2008-09 dry season, the Military Zone 7 officers said.

Colonel Uk Khnuoch, the deputy army commander of Battambang province, indicated that Cambodian troops based in Battambang province located the remains of 172 (invading) Vietnamese soldiers, between 2003 and 2007. Uk Khnuoch indicated that the majority of the remains – 84 of them – dug out were located in Sampov Loun district. Uk Khnuoch discussed about the finding of the remains of these (invading) Vietnamese soldiers during a ceremony, held on 26 December, to hand over these remains to the Vietnamese K-70 workgroup which is based in Cambodia. The (invading) Vietnamese soldiers lost their life when they fought with the Khmer Rouge in the late 70s.
