Robber identified - Video owner took out camera in fear of reprisal

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nys_tlR1ooM

Synopsis: Police confirmed that the video shown above was captured during a daylight robbery in Phnom Penh, just across from the Phnom Penh International Airport. During the robbery, a woman was shot three times by the robbers for attempting to wrestle back a box of her money worth about 100 million riels (~$30,000). Using the video, the police was able to identified the robbers, but it declined to reveal their identity. The victim died on the way to the hospital.

An announcement was posted on Facebook indicating that the owner of the video camera which taped the entire robbery scene had decided to remove the camera because he fears reprisals from the robbers. On the other hand, considering that nobody dared help the victim of the robbery, it is understandable why the owner of the video camera is concerned for his safety. After all this is the Kingdoom of Don't You Ever Wonder! Get it?

A thief giveth … a burglar taketh them away

20 sewing machines donated by Hun Xen to Hun Xen Chheu Teal high school all stolen

Takeo – 20 sewing machines donated by Hun Xen and his chumteav to the Hun Xen Chheu Teal high school, located on Roka Krao commune, Daun Keo city, in 2007 were all stolen by a group of burglars who broke the lock to the door and went in to steal all of them at 1AM on 07 April. Due to this robbery, the high school principal was scolded for his lacking in the administration and for his lack of responsibility. A teacher from the high school indicated that these sewing machines were donation by Hun Xen and his chumteav, and the burglars took them all, including a number of other materials that were stored in the room. The burglars pried on the door metal bars and were able to unlock the key before entering the room and took everything away safely without anybody knowing about them.

It was not until 8AM on the next morning that the incident was known. The same teacher above added that when Hun Xen donated the 20 sewing machines, as well as 5 computers and 2 printers. However, of the 5 computers donated to the school, the city decided to take one away for its own use, another one disappeared for no reason and only 3 were left to the school. It should be noted that in all high schools in Cambodia, the principal would organize round-the-clock guard by teachers, but for the Hun Xen Chheu Teal high school, Va Van, the principal, hired an outside employee to guard the school. When we met Va Van, he said that with such a big high school, nobody can guard it completely, he said that even a locked private house can still be broken in by burglars.

It’s not that the high school does not have a guard, in fact it has a night guard, but on the day of the burglary, the guard did not know about it. Meas Sophon, the police inspector for Daun Keo city, answered over the phone that his place has no information for reporters, if the reporters want to know, they should go to the spot because he is so busy that he does not even have time to sleep, and he said that the school has no guard that was why the burglars can break in. Nut Khon, the director of the provincial education, youth and sport department told Koh Santepheap over the phone that about this burglary, up to now, Va Van, the school principal, has not reported the case to him yet.

Homicide eyed in Swede's Cambodia death

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia, Nov. 15 (UPI) -- Cambodian officials suspect that the death of a Swedish businessman in Phnom Penh is a homicide, Swedish Embassy officials say.

Karl-Anders Larsson of the Swedish Embassy in Phnom Penh told the news website DN.se Sunday that local authorities are treating the death of the unnamed 45-year-old man as a case of murder.

"We have received information that the body has been found and that he has been identified," Larsson said. "With all probability it is question of murder."

DN.se said the man disappeared from his Phnom Penh hotel room Thursday and his body was found in Kandal province south of the city on Friday. The Web site reported that the businessman had lived in Cambodia for several years and ran a hotel in the coastal city of Sihanoukville.

Police said the man met a woman over the Internet and was last seen leaving his hotel in her company. An investigation reportedly found his hotel room safe deposit box had been forced open, possibly as part of a well-planned robbery.

Robbers outside Cambodian bank net 50,000 dollars, police say

Tue, 07 Oct 2008
DPA

Phnom Penh - Armed robbers committed a brazen afternoon stickup outside a bank and made off with an estimated 50,000 dollars, in one of the biggest robberies of its kind in the country's history, police said Tuesday. A Daun Penh district police source said the thieves took the cash at gunpoint in broad daylight at around lunchtime as the customer left Acleda Bank, a major bank in the Cambodian capital.

Last year, members of an Indonesian-led ring were jailed for robbing wealthy-looking bank clients by flattening their car tyres and following them until they were forced to get out of the vehicle.

But police said the haul in Tuesday's robbery exceeded any of those, and was not believed to be linked. The robbers remained at large.

French woman killed during daylight robbery

November 14 2007
AFP

Phnom Penh - A French woman was killed Wednesday when she was struck by a mini-bus after being pulled off a motorcycle taxi by purse-snatchers in the Cambodian capital Phnom Penh, police said.

Aurelia LaCroix, 23, died instantly following the noon-time robbery, which occurred when at least two young men on a motorcycle pulled up alongside her and grabbed her purse, said Ben Khun, deputy Phnom Penh traffic police chief.

"The victim fell off the motorcycle taxi and the mini-bus ran her over," he told AFP.

He said it was unclear if LaCroix lived in Cambodia or was a tourist.

The robbers escaped, he said, while both the bus and taxi drivers fled the scene, he added.

While robberies have decreased overall in Cambodia, purse and chain-snatching are on the rise and are particularly problematic around major holidays, affecting Cambodians and foreigners alike.

Cambodia next week is set to begin celebrating the Water Festival which draws millions of people to the capital for four days of boat races and parties.

Family Fights Off Store Robber With Fish Sauce Jar [- Mr. "Ruos" survives ("ruos") one more time]

Aug 3, 2007

(CBS) METHUEN, Mass. - A holdup man picked the wrong target Thursday night when he walked into a package store in Methuen, Mass.

"When I opened the door I see the guy stand right there, gun pointed at my daughter," said Vannarithros Ross, who had just returned to his family-run package store after running an errand.

"And my daughter told me in my language that we got robbed….He didn't know I was behind him, so just grabbed him real tight so by his reaction I'm afraid he gonna pull the trigger on my kid."

Ross says his son grabbed a bottle of fish sauce and hit the gunman on the head as Ross swung him to the floor. "My son, he just reacting. He keep hitting on the head until I told him, stop it because he was gonna kill the guy."

Ross says police came with two or three minutes. "That's very fast. Amazing. Very amazing."

Methuen police say an investigation has not determined any criminal acts on the family's part.

So how does Ross feel today? "Well, I still feel bad for the guy cause there's so much blood on the floor."

Ross considers himself lucky.

In his native Cambodia, he survived the Pol Pot Regime and the Khmer Rouge.

The gun the suspect flashed during the robbery turned out to be a BB gun but Ross and his family didn't know that. Police planned to charge the gunman with robbery when he gets out of the hospital.

A poetic post script to this story, Mr. Ross' name, in Cambodian, means survive. (KI-Media note: Mr. Ross' name should be spelled Ruos)

Police say the hold-up man had $400 to $500 in his pocket, taken from the store's cash register, but the family got it back.

Would-be robber of Cambodian-American store now faces a big "headache" (no pun intended!)

Would-be robber meets his match as convenience store clerk fights back

Friday, August 3, 2007
Channel 7 News
Boston, Massachusetts, USA

METHUEN, Mass. -- A wild scene played out in a liquor store as workers turn the tables on a crook.

Douglas Brown, 47, was in court today on Friday, bandaged and bloody, after he allegedly attempted to rob a liquor store in Methuen on Thursday.

But thanks to the store owner, all he left with were bruises.

The robbery attempt was captured on a store surveillance camera, reportedly showing Brown entering the store with a gun and demanding money from the clerk. That's when the clerk's father, Vannarith Ross, who is also the store owner, walked in.

Ross and his son knocked brown to the ground using a fish sauce bottle.

"My son get up with the fish sauce bottle and hit him on the head so I can push him down to the floor," Vannarith Ross said.

They pinned him down while others in the store called police.

Ross says although it was a gruesome encounter he'd do the same thing again to protect his family, but he hopes it never happens again.

Brown was formally charged with armed robbery and faces between 15-20 years in prison if he is convicted. His bail was set at $250,000.

Cambodian Police Make Arrests In Suspected Angkor Wat Robbery Ring

DPA

Eleven men and two women were arrested and charged them with running an organized bag-snatching ring targeting tourists at the Angkor Wat temple complex, police said Wednesday.

Minor Crime Bureau Police Chief Phuen Akroun said the operation had taken nearly two weeks and came after complaints from both Cambodian and foreign victims.

"They were riding motorbikes and pulling bags from people, then passing them to a second group on another motorbike if someone chased them," Akroun said by telephone.

"Some victims were pulled from the bike in the robbery and could have been injured," the chief added. "This sort of behaviour destroys the reputation of the temples."

He said the accused, aged 20 to 24, had been remanded in custody and would face court on robbery charges. The offence carries a five-year jail term. Drugs appeared to have been a motivating factor, he added.

The Angkor Wat temple complex, comprised of ninth- to 12th-century monuments, is the country's premier tourist draw. It lies just outside the northern city of Siem Reap, about 300 kilometres from Phnom Penh.

Cop robbed in the middle of Phnom Penh

Tuesday, March 06, 2007

Koh Santepheap Newspaper
Translated from Khmer by Heng Soy

Phnom Penh - A traffic cop from Phnom Penh city was robbed at gunpoint by 4 thieves who took away his motorcycle. The robbery took place in the middle of traffic when the cop was getting out of work, and he was about to return home. The daring robbery took place in front of the Than pagoda located along the Norodom Boulevard, in Sangkat Boeng Keng Kang 1, Khan Chamcar Mon. The incident occurred at 4:15 AM of 04 March 2007.

According to an anonymous source, the name of the robbed cop is Chan Dara, he is 40-year-old and lives in Takhmao district, Kandal province. The motorcycle robbed was a silver C90 model, bearing the license plate 1986 PP 1. The cop was returning home, he was traveling on the Norodom Boulevard. When he arrived in front of the Than pagoda, two men on a black motorcycle forced him to stop and they pulled a gun to point at him, demanding to take his motorcycle. At the same time, another group of 2 thieves on another black motorcycle threatened the cop and told him not to yell.

When Chan Dara was robbed, he was still wearing his police uniform, however, he was wearing a civilian shirt on top of the uniform shirt. It was probably because of this that the robbers did not know they were robbing a cop.
