Barely two years since returning to Cambodia after her family’s 1975 exile to the United States, Princess Soma Norodom has already made a splash in her native Phnom Penh.

On any given night, the outgoing California-raised royal is just as likely to be found mingling with the Kingdom’s elite at a posh wedding, as she is grooving to hip-hop at Riverhouse or speaking passionately against US deportations at an activist gathering.

She’s everywhere.

And now, Phnom Penhites can expect to see a little more of the socialite princess with the launch of her new weekly column, “The Social Agenda”, which debuts this Friday in The Phnom Penh Post’s English and Khmer versions.

Sihanouk in bad physical shape: Says who?

Click on the email in French to zoom in

Translated from French by Alain de Veng

Email from HRH Samdach Krom Preah Norodom Ranariddh to their Majesties

Very revered Maman,

My humble person sincerely dares hope that this message will find very revered Papa and Maman and adored Luong Aun [King-Brother] in great physical and moral shape. Would very revered Maman be kind enough to bring to the knowledge of very revered Papa the following:

“Very revered Papa,

Kh-nhom Srey [Your female servant, i.e. Uk Phalla, Ranariddh’s mistress] and my humble self had the immense joy of receiving two (2) Royal Singing dvds (Beijing, December 2010) which were long awaited for. We, including the young Sutha [Ranariddh’s son with Uk Phalla], watched them immediately. In all sincerity, we were subjugated and profoundly in awe. With your highest authorization, please allow me to make the following comments:
  1. The interpretation: Very revered Papa was very remarkable, in all aspects. Your voice: much stronger and beautiful! Not a single false note. Gestures that are both dignified, simple and noble. Very humble but with emotion: A BIG BRAVO! And what physical shape [you have]!
  2. The repertoire: A judicious choice of songs. A happy mix of “immortals”. So many good souvenirs, so many joy while listening to them. It’s magnifique.
  3. The musical arrangement: It was already very good last time. This time around, it is impeccable! The musicians were in perfect unison along with the “very big Singer [Sihanouk].” In my humble opinion, the two saxophone players and the flute player have distinguished themselves. The others did not lose their merits, quite to the contrary.
  4. The costume: no comment. It was sober and elegant.
In conclusion: Such “Royal singing” of this (very high) quality, people are asking for more of them!

Kh-nhom Srey and my humble person are asking Papa to present to very revered Maman the expression of our very respectful and sincere gratitude for the logistic needed to allow the production of this great “Royal Singing”.

The young Sutha, who surprisingly listened to the dvds, and Kh-nhom Srey are very happy to join my humble person top present to very revered papa our deepest and most respectful gratitude and our greatest admiration.

From me: Norodom Ranariddh

Kh-nhom Srey is very happy to join my modest person to present to very revered Maman our most fervent wishes of great health, as well as the faithfulness of our always deferent, admiring and grateful feelings.

From me: Norodom Ranariddh

Supreme irony for the Supreme Advisor to the King: Living under royal public insult from Hun Sen

Hun Sen: Ranariddh has a title, a salary but no power

Prince Ranariddh’s new position as Supreme Advisor to the King – a title equivalent to that of a prime minister – should not be mistaken, Hun Sen declared on Tuesday 06 January during the inauguration of the new Stung Meanchey bridge.

Hun Sen explained that the new title granted to prince gave him a salary but no rights and power of a real prime minister. Hun Sen indicated that the proof to this is the fact that Norodom Ranariddh will not have a spokesman, no car equipped with blaring siren to lead his convoy (he must ask for one to accomplish his missions), nor will he have any personal advisors. This distinction offered to the prince was hammered in a deal between King Sihamoni and Hun Sen, the latter indicated, so that that prince could receive a salary.

Hun Sen also reminded that he is the only prime minister of Cambodia, and that no other Council of ministers can be formed because some people have been lured to pay [bribes] to become spokesman and members of Prince Ranariddh’s cabinet.

This reminder done, Hun Sen returned to the July 1997 armed confrontations between royalist forces led by Ranariddh and government troops led by Hun Sen. He accused the prince of betraying his then-partner in the coalition government, i.e. the CPP, by signing agreements with the “outlawed” KR behind the CPP’s back. A fight for power was put to rest, Hun Sen added while indicating that Ranariddh’s camp was weakened. “Now, there are only national forces and nothing else!” Hun Sen concluded as he is certain that his message is well understood.
