A custom official was shot by unidentified assailant, and he sustained severe injuries while he was walking along a public road to go to a rendez-vous with his girlfriend. The incident took place at 8:45 PM on 05 March 2009. The official was shot at the corner of Sothearos and Suramarit streets, he was shot 5 times, and one of the bullet hit an innocent bystander who was strolling at the incident location. Meas Narith was the 51-year-old custom official who was shot, he lives in Bonla Sa’et village, Khmuonh commune, Sen Sok district, Phnom Penh. The innocent bystander woman who was also shot during the incident was 56-year-old Kim Soth, a farmer who lives in Sethey commune, Samaky Meanchey district, Kampong Chhnang province. The official shot received 2 bullets on his chest, two on his right forearm, and one of his finger was also severed off. He was sent to the hospital emergency, but the motive for the shooting is not known yet.
