Phnom Penh – Several TV stations affiliated with the CPP reported at 04:01 AM local time this morning that Cambodian First Lady, Lok Chumteav Bun Rany Hun Sen, had asked her husband last night to issue a state decree reversing all the songs previously banned from public broadcasting.
In a sudden change of heart, Mrs. Hun Sen pleaded her husband, Samdech Decho Hun Sen, to reverse the previous ban imposed on three songs -- "If I Can't be Your First Wife, Can I be Your Second?", "I Love Another's Husband" and "May I Have a Piece of Your Heart?". Furthermore, Cambodia’s first lady also asked that the monogamy law be also annulled.
In order to speed up the reinstatement of the banned songs, the first lady asked that her husband issued a decree and that it would be broadcasted live on state and party-affiliated media so that it can take effect immediately. The media-shy first lady also gave an interview explaining her change of heart. “People change with time you know, besides that Cambodia is in dire needs of new blood, so what’s more appropriate than having some libertinage in our society,” The Mekong Daily quoted the first lady as saying.
When asked if the annulment of the monogamy law would require unanimous approval from the National Assembly, the first lady interrupted her husband who was about to provide an answer by saying: “Why do we need the National Assembly approval? Isn’t it dominated by CPP MPs? Since my Samdech Decho is the top CPP man, whatever he says is the law isn’t it? So what do you think the CPP MPs would do if this annulment were to be submitted to the NA? Of course the CPP MPs would approve it, it’s a foregone conclusion, so what the need? Besides that, you have seen how swiftly my Samdech Decho dealt with the land dispute problems? Was there any need for a tribunal? No, so here also there is no need for the NA either. On top of that, whatever I say isn’t it as good as words from the bible since my Samdech Decho’s words are as good as the law. Isn’t there a Khmer proverb that states: ‘If the husband is the PM, his wife must be the Queen?’”
As of 07:00 AM this morning, state and CPP-affiliated radio stations were heard blaring out these formerly banned songs. A survey indicated that male listeners called by such a large number to radio stations to ask for a replay of these songs that all lines on the 012 phone was completely jammed.
