An official from the Cambodian Center for Human Rights (CCHR) said that the organization plans to reduce its staff by 70%.
Ou Virak who was recently nominated as the new president of CCHR, said that the cause of the staff reduction is the lack of funding.
He said that the US-based International Republican Institute (IRI) is reducing the financial aid it provides to CCHR.
Following the resignation of Kem Sokha, the former president of CCHR, CCHR was split into two entities: one of which, the CCHR, is under the control of Ou Virak, and the other entity, the Voice of Democracy, is under the control of Pa Nguon Tieng.
Ou Virak said that CCHR is planning to educate local people about a new program known as the strengthening of the local power.
Ou Virak said: “The strengthening of the local power … includes the training of the people living in the local communities so they know about the role of the government, the role of the commune/sangkat government, in order to achieve transparency in the governance.”
