Last week, Thai cops in Pattaya, Thailand, sweept up at least 20 Vietnamese beggars with Cambodian citizenship. The majority of these beggars are women with newly born babies and young children. Pattaya cops said that the beggar sweeping operation started in the afternoon of Tuesday and it netted beggar women with newly born babies, as well as children selling flowers, CDs and photos. These beggars were rounded up and gathered with a group of Vietnamese beggars with Cambodian citizenship who illegally traveled to Thailand. In addition to the roundup of these Viet beggars, Thai authority also arrested a number of Thai citizens who are involved in directing these beggars. Thirapon, a Pattaya police major, indicated that the beggar sweeping operation was conducted because of the increasing number of beggars who affect tourists. All these beggars will be sent back to the Cambodian border following their questioning.
