The ministry of Economy and Finance indicated that Thailand provided about $40 million in loan to Cambodia for the restoration of National Road 68 linking Kralanh, Samrong to O’Smach.
Vonsey Visoth, the Cambodian deputy secretary of state of the ministry of Economy and Finance, and Acksiri Buranasiri, Thailand's deputy general director of the Finance Minister, signed an agreement to provide this loan to Cambodia on 27 August 2009, at the ministry of Finance.
Vongsey Visoth indicated, during the signing ceremony, that this Thai loan amounts to 1.4 billion Thai Baths, about $40 million, will be used to restore National Road No. 68 linking Kralanh, Samrong with O’Smach, and that this is a plan to provide mutual economic benefit between the two countries.
He added that the linking of Cambodian northern provinces to Thailand’s Isan (western) provinces will contribute to the increase in land transportation cooperation, the exchange of commercial merchandises and cross-border tourism between the two countries, and furthermore, it is also a strengthening and growth of economic activities in safe transportation regions, and an integration of poor isolated areas, as well as an improvement of the livelihood of people living in this region.
Vonsey Visoth indicated that, including this loan, Thailand has provided 3 development loans to Cambodia, with a total amount of $99 million. The first Thai loan amounts to $21 million and it was geared to the development of National Road 48 (Koh Kong-Sre Ambil), the second loan amounts to $37 million for the planned construction of National Road 67 linking Anlong Veng to Siem Reap. In addition, Thailand also provided a financial aid of $10 million to Cambodia for the restoration of the road linking Choam Sa-ngam to Anlong Veng.
He added that the loan agreement concluded today is another step in the strengthening of the economic cooperation between the two countries through loans geared for infrastructure developments.
