Vietnam-Cambodia ties marked in HCM City
The relationship between Vietnam and Cambodia over the last half-century has created a firm foundation to build upon, permanent vice chairman Nguyen Thanh Tai of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee said.
Speaking at a ceremony to mark the 40th anniversary of Vietnam-Cambodia diplomatic ties (June 24) in the city on June 27, vice chairman Tai said that HCM City was proud of its role in aiding the development of the two countries' ties.
HCM City and the Cambodian capital of Phnom Penh since 1999 have embarked on a series of economic, cultural and diplomatic programmes that have won acclaim from both of their ASEAN member central governments.
The two cities are now turning their attention to commerce, agriculture, healthcare and education initiatives while supporting a series of cooperation programmes of partners from the two localities.
Speaking at the ceremony, Cambodian Consul General in HCM City, Luong Kim Khoun stressed that the celebration of the 40th anniversary of the two countries' diplomatic ties would act as a timely reminder of why the two countries valued their relationship so highly.
He went on to thank Vietnam for its military help in ousting Pol Pot and his genocidal regime from power in 1979 and relayed the Cambodian public's appreciation of the development assistance they had received from their eastern neighbour.
Recently signed cooperation agreements on economy, culture, science, technology and education have been effective in bringing localities of the two sides closer, particularly in provinces that straddle the 1,000 km border the countries share, said the Cambodian Consul General.
