In a letter dispatched to Prince Norodom Ranariddh who is currently in France, Prince Norodom Sirivudh sent him his resignation as chairman of Funcinpec working group for Kandal province. These working groups formed by the Funcinpec in each province are responsible for the organization of the electoral campaign grass root group for that administrative level. They are chaired by government ministers. “Because of the concrete changes occurring in the political situation, and because of the impossibility to provide [adequate] attention to the needs of this task, I am asking for the resignation from the position of chairman of the working group for the Kandal province, and to work for the party as a bsic member of the government for this position,” Prince Sirivudh wrote in the letter which was distributed yesterday. A few weeks ago, Norodom Sirivudh was the vice-prime minister, co-minister of interior, member of parliament and Funcinpec secretary-general. Today, he only holds his title as member of parliament and he has no position within the party.

Since the resignation of prince Ranariddh from his position as president of the National Assembly, following a salvo of attacks from prime miniter Hun Sen against the Funcinpec and his leadership, this party had been deeply shuffled at its leadership – this did not go without creating internal tensions. Nhiek Bun Chhay, the new secretary-general who kept his position as vice-prime minister, said that there is nothing abnormal to the resignation of prince Sirivudh. “This is not a great event. Usually, chairmen of the working groups are ministers. Prince Sirivudh is no longer one. Therefore, he does not have the means necessary to accomplish this task,” he commented.

Nevertheless, in conclusion to his letter, prince Sirivudh told prince Ranariddh that he “deeply hopes” to see him back in Phnom Penh “very soon.” It is as if [prince Sirivudh is not satisfied, unlike other party heavy weights, especially those belonging to the royal family, that the party apparatus is left to the safeguard of Nhiek Bun Chhay. While rumors abound regarding impending defection of Funcinpec party members to join the CPP, and that the pro-CPP news media had advanced the name of the vice-governor of Siem Reap to be one of those defectors, Nhiek Bun Chhay noted that “in the absence of prince Ranariddh, we are encountering some difficulties in the management of the party.” The secretary-general of the party who affirmed that he is working in close consultation with his president, assures that the latter will return back home as soon as he will finish the classes he is teaching in France. This is doubtful.
