Vietnam falsely claims that only about 1 million Khmers in the country - Does Vietnam try to minimize Khmer Krom problems?

The ethnic Khmer community in Vietnam’s southern region is gearing up for its traditional New Year festival, Chol Chnam Thmay, which falls this year on April 14-16.

There are nearly one million Khmers in the country, living mostly in the Mekong delta provinces of Bac Lieu, Tra Vinh, and Soc Trang.

Soc Trang authorities held Monday a meeting with Buddhist dignitaries and other representatives of the Khmer community, and presented gifts worth VND120 million (US$7,536) to poor families and those of war martyrs.

The People's Committee of Bac Lieu gifted VND100,000 each to over 230 Khmers.

The Buddhist dignitaries and other representatives expressed their appreciation for the authorities’ gestures at a get-together held Sunday.

"We were moved to seeing the provincial officials visiting and presenting gifts to Khmer families and pagodas ahead of the festival," they said.

With Vietnam’s economy booming, the community has seen considerable improvement in their living standards.

In related news, a ceremony was held in Ho Chi Minh City Monday evening to celebrate Chol Chnam Thmay with Cambodia’s ambassador to Vietnam addressing its opening.
