More weapons to be destroyed in Cambodia's Battambang province [for show-and-tell only]

More than 6,600 small arms will be destroyed in public on Aug. 23, state news agency AKP said on Friday.

Of the above-mentioned weapons, 2,234 were voluntarily surrendered by residents in Battambang province following the appeals at JSAC (Japan Assistance Team for Small Arms Management in Cambodia) workshops to surrender weapons to the Authorities.

It also includes 2,482 weapons discovered from a weapons cache in Samlout district, a former Democratic Kampuchea stronghold in March to April 2006.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Sar Kheng will preside over the upcoming weapons destruction ceremony "Flame of Peace".

The destruction ceremony is expected to enhance the residents's confidence in the security authorities and in peace in the country.

JSAC has implemented its weapons collection and other peace building activities in the northwest areas of Cambodia (Oddar Meanchey, Banteay Meanchey and Siem Reap provinces) and is currently focusing on Battambang and Kompong Thom provinces. The number of small arms collected through JSAC activities since 2003 is now 21,708.
