Over 7 mln Cambodians to vote for commune councils election [-How many legitimate one? How many were disfranchised?]

December 30, 2006

About 7.8 million Cambodian voters will participate the ongoing commune councils election, said a press release from the Cambodian National Election Committee (NEC) on Saturday.

Altogether 7,799,371 voters will go to vote at 14,428 polling stations in Cambodia's all 24 provinces and cities, said NEC member Koy Veth.

The NEC removed 160,260 names from the 2005 list because those voters died, changed residence, were included twice on the lists or were removed of their rights to vote, Koy Veth said, adding that the NEC plans to publish the list of polling stations twice around the country on Dec. 31, 2006 and March 31, 2007.

The candidates registration will start on Jan. 1-3, 2007, Koy Veth said.

She also urged all political candidates to register at local election committees in time.

Meanwhile, the NEC plans to distribute information card to every voter in Feb. 2007 around Cambodia, telling them about the date of polling, which polling station they belong to and what documents they need, said NEC Secretary General Tep Nytha.

According to the press release, four political parties are ready for the 2007 election. They are the Cambodian People's Party, the Funcinpec Party, the Sam Rainsy Party and the Norodom Ranariddh Party.

The 2007 commune councils election's process started on Sept. 21, 2006, and will end on May 23, 2007.
