PHNOM PENH: Tourist arrivals in Cambodia jumped more than 20% to about 1.7 million in 2006, bringing US$1.4bil in revenue to the impoverished kingdom, a senior tourism official said yesterday.
“This amount of money contributes a lot to the good of the country's economy,” said Thong Khon, secretary of state at the tourism ministry.
Thong Khon told AFP that the jump – up from 1.4 million visitors in 2005 – puts Cambodia back on track to reach its goal of three million annual foreign arrivals by 2010. This follows dismal industry figures in 2003 due to the SARS panic and anti-Thai riots in the capital Phnom Penh.
