Cambodian king Norodom Sihamoni returned to Cambodia Sunday from a series of international visits in time to see in the International New Year from his palace in the capital.
The king's return followed an international tour which took in Germany, France and China and also included time spent with his father, former king Norodom Sihanouk, who continues to undergo routine medical tests in Beijing.
Sihanouk, who turned 84 this year, abdicated in favour of his son, King Sihamoni, in October 2004 citing his age and a range of health complaints including colon cancer and diabetes.
Sihamoni arrived at Phnom Penh International Airport late afternoon local time and was greeted by a number of dignitaries before proceeding straight to his palace, located in the heart of the capital.
Although International New Year is celebrated in Cambodia it is a relatively low-key event in the mainly Buddhist country, which celebrates its own Cambodian New Year in April.
Sihamoni's latest international trip had seen him absent from Cambodia since November.

This King is supposed to symbolise the country National Indendant of all National Institutions to make sure that all citizens are all equal in front of the laws. But in Cambodia, this very small king is a puppet of a ruling party. What can we call this kind of king? King should have full privilege and immunity about the law. But this one is being told to listen to Hun Sen at all time if not, he will be kicked out by hun sen from the trone.
Hun Sen, according to the law, is in fact one of the people deciding who would be king...sort of The King Maker in today Cambodia

Hi ... all my beloved critics. Sometimes you need to better understand politics before you criticize the king. We know that Hun Sen is the most powerful in the country. If the new king dares against him, he would be kicked out immediately. Remember the new king has not gained firm position and much popularity among the people yet. Therefore, it is unwise to confront with Hun Sen now. It is not the right time to do so. It is better to be calm and maintain his throne, and tries to build good relations with people throughout the country as well as with the international community. When he is widely-known and respected by the majority of Cambodian people and the World, he'll have a say and in a position that can challenge Hun Sen's authority. It's not too late to wait until that time. "Joinly Give Our Moral Support And Respect To Our New King!"
