The 7 January invasion initially had nothing to do with saving Cambodian people from the Khmer Rouge. The Viet objectives were to overthrow an unfriendly and disobedient former puppet, and to vietnamise its influence and settlement in Cambodia.
Trucks loaded with Cambodian valuable assets were seen leaving Phnom Penh days and nights for Vietnam after the invasion was successful. The national treasure inside the Emeral Buddha Pagoda was unknowingly spared as the Viets were busy with other things. When it was handed over to the Cambodian officials, and the door was first opened, the Viet officials just beat themselves on the heads and couldn't believe they had missed such an invaluable treasure. Whatever valuable antiques left inside the Royal Palace were shared among the top ex-KR officials of the new puppet regime. These officials also reportedly swapped some of the treasure inside the Emerald Buddha Pagoda with copies.
7 January Day is celebrated to remind Cambodian people that they will never be free from the Vietnamese grip. Also, it is a symbolic warning to all Khmers that they will suffer the same fate as the Khmer Rouge if they resist.
