Bunnarith, an official from the Licadho human rights group in Sihanoukville, said that villagers recently evicted by the authority from disputed lands in Khan Mittapheap, Sihanoukville, are facing food shortage, and a large number of them became ill.
Bunnarith told RFA on Saturday that among the 84 families – forced to move out from their village after a violent clash with the police which also arrested several villagers – a number of them came down with fever, diarrhea, and cold. Bunnarith calls on humanitarian organizations to provide aid to these villagers.
Bunnarith said: “The villagers came to my organization to ask for help, aid, food, because right now, a large number of them are facing food shortage and illnesses, such as cold for example. They are requesting for generous donors to provide them with rice, or food, because they now live miserably in tents under the rain and wind. Furthermore, in Sihanoukville, it is very windy right now. If they live in a tent for several months, they will face even more dangers because they just simply cannot live in tents forever.”
Nevertheless, Bunnarith could not provide the exact number of sick villagers yet.
A violent clash took place in Khan Mittapheap, Sihanoukville, on 20 April, due to land dispute. Up to now, there is still no resolution to this dispute yet, and 12 of the villagers are still being jailed.
