Joblessness in Cambodia

The April 2007 edition of the Asean Business magazine indicated that the Cambodian youth lacks the skill and the expertise needed to build a good living condition because they did not receive quality education and it is difficult for them to find a job.

The magazine quoted Nisha Agrawal, the World Band country representative in Cambodia, who said that even if a student completed his/her education with quality education, there is no guarantee that this student will find a job. Nisha Agrawal also said that more than 70% of Cambodians under the age of 30 have no job.

The government should prevent the increase in the number of private schools which are set up mainly to make a profit, but which do not provide quality education to the students. A number of students obtained 2 or 3 diplomas from various universities, but they do not have the proper skills needed by the local job market.

A World Bank report warned that the government failure to create jobs for the youth will push Cambodia into more social unrest in the future.

Job issue has haunted Cambodia since the 1960s. During that period of time, Cambodia promoted education and was rather successful at it. Unfortunately, as the number of young people were graduating from colleges and universities, Cambodia's market was unable to absorpt them due in part to its undeverlopment and agrarian base economy.

Discontent built into a fever pitch and contributed in part to the rise of the Khmer Krahom.

Fast forward 57 years, and the same issue arise again...Now we have schools; private, public or bogus or otherwise promoting education, without seriously addressing the issue of jobs...

Cambodia is setting itself on a course that can be potential explosive...??

Wrong, it is not cambodia that set
itself on a course that can be
potential explosive. Is it the
opposition that hide behind the
word "democracy" that did that.
They litterally detered jobs from
comming into Cambodia to make
people suffer so that people will
rise against the government.

70% of Cambodian jobless, why? please look at the current leaders and they hold post more than two posts and in some cases Cambodian leaders hold post up to 60 places. If these people give up and just keep one, then 70% can be reduced to 15-20%. what do you think?

Wrong, we need to reduce it down
to better than 5%, and the only
way to do that is to get rid of
troublemakers like you.

Youth bulk in Cambodia is both danger and opportunity.

- Danger for Hun Sen government to face with this strong flow.
- Opportunity of SRP to compaign for change of leader in hope they can have sufficient job through credible policy laid by SRP.

Youth is in the very large gap now..

12.41pm, it is not the opposition whomchase awyn jobs. it is your incompetent and corrupt cpp govt who extorted so much money from investors upfront that see cambodia coming to this siutation.

if you get of corruption, bribery, install proper lawas, you will see more jobs will come to cambodia.

Blaming oppositon is only for the dumb communists propandan to hide their incompetence.

It was the opposition that tried to show to everyone that Sihanouk is a communist supporter. But Sihanouok killed them instead of the ones that were backed by Hanoi. He left many of them alone because of Hanoi. Sihanouk preached to everyone that those who are against him are the devils, at the same time he was betraying his own people. Fast forward///Same thing, you got people saying it is the oppositions that are making Cambodia bad, and the media. Look at where the governement want to take cambodia to? Turn it into a hot desert full of resorts, casinos, like Las Vegas? Booming economy alright but just outside the boderline, you see nothing. Just empty buidlings. Lets not talk about how Hot it can get there.

Our dear Campatriot 12:41's sense of Khmer history is somewhat rather blurry, especially, when the said historical evidence has proven itself to be a major factor that contribute to the rise of the Khmer Krahom. Mr. Hun Sen was a rather good example of a discontented youth back in the 1960s.

Mr. Hun Sen did not pick up arm because he was gainfully employed, rather, he does so because it was the trend of the time... but more than anything...it was an alternative to what Cambodia job market has to offer at the time. Either joint the dissident or being employed by the Lon No army, which was, if recall, was nothing more than a bunch of drafted children.

Was some sort of policies being put into play to draft young men and women recently into the army?...Can this be an acknowledgement that the current administration is having trouble finding jobs for its youths...?

7:33, first, somdach Hun Sen was
only bout 6 years old in 1960.
second, it wasn't the
administration who can't find jobs
for people. It was the stupid
oppositions who kept jobs from
reaching the people. Stop spraying
shit all over the places, will ya?
