A high-ranking SRP official rejected the party role claimed by a group of recent defectors.

Kandal SRP MP Ngo Sovann, who is also candidate for the SRP party chairman in the Svay Rieng province said that Penh Sakhen was never a special envoy of leader Sam Rainsy, furthermore he said that Miech Chhea and Nuon Sim also never play any role, and that the group wants to deceive SRP supporters only.

Ngo Sovann said: “A few SRP party supporters who defected the party in Svay Rieng province, did so by trying to deceive the people by claiming that party members defected by the thousands. When they cited their role, it was a deception, for example, Penh Sakhen claimed that he was a special envoy for Mr Sam Rainsy, this is not true.”

This rejection took place after Penh Sakhen, the former SRP council from the province of Svay Rieng, as well as a number of chairmen of the SRP district councils, gave an interview to RFA to tell their disappointment and their defection from SRP to join Kem Sokha’s HRP on 24 July.

In response to this rejection, Penh Sakhen claimed that he has all the documents to prove that he was really a special envoy sent to strengthen the Takeo province during the 2003 general election.

Penh Sakhen said: “I was the special envoy of the SRP President to go to Takeo province, the letter of nomination no. 395 SSR dated 16 May 2003. As for Nuon Sim, he was the former chairman of the Kompong Ro district party council, and Miech Chhea was the chairman of the Romeas Hek district party council, they have proper document.”

Miech Chhea replied that he has a nomination letter as the Romeas Hek party council chairman no. 014 SSR dated 03 January 2001.

The former chairman of the Kompong Ro district party council said: “I am Nuon Sim, I used to be the district representative leading the Kompong Ro district.”

Kem Sokha said that in democracy, any citizen has the right to choose the party they like to participate in their political activities.

Nevertheless, Mar Sophal, the director of investigation for the Comfrel organization, warned that the division among political parties, other than the ruling party, is a loss for these parties, and it also helps the ruling party to gain even more, especially for a country where the voting system is proportional.

It is very typical that the fighting amongst SRP members at the provicial level occurred. It is also a typical tactic in trying to improve supporting at the provincial level, SRP always promotes some who has money, especially members from oversea to provincial SRP committee to help to boost up support. But the problems always occur when those persons dried up their pockets.

The talkative Ngor Sovann tends to forget the dedication and hardship of those who helped gaining the vote. He appreciates no one, but himself. Personally, I knew that Penh Sokhen was a special envoy to help the Takeo province. In 2003, in the set up of provincial committee for 2003 election, he was cheated, depite many efforts he tried for the provicne. Unfortunately, he was a Ngor Sovann's clane.

I think Ngor Sovann is a good guy. He works hard and very active in SRP especially he is a good leader.
People who don't like Ngor Sovann because they're jealous, I already saw a lot of them. They just go around, bad-mouth about others, and try to be a smart-aleck.
