Vietnamese border forces have arrested a man who was transporting a new kind of expensive lab-made drugs, seized for the first time in Vietnam, from Cambodia to the country, local newspaper Pioneer said on Friday.
The 27-year-old man named Tang Than Lam from southern Ho Chi Minh city was caught red-handed crossing the border to southern Tay Ninh province on Aug. 21. He carried 350 grams of the drug in the form of solid crystals valued at 157.5 million Vietnamese dong (VND) (over 9,800 U.S. dollars).
Lam confessed he had transported lab-made narcotics from Cambodia to local drug dealers in the city twice. Each time, he received a wage of 1.5 million VND (94 dollars).
Vietnam detected 4,246 drugs-related cases involving 6,281 people in the first half of this year, confiscating 93.6 kg of heroin, 28.3 kg of opium, 201.3 kg of marijuana, and 19,719 pills of lab-made narcotics. As of late June, the country had 166,291 drug addicts on record, 84.7 percent of whom use heroin.
Last year, Vietnam detected 10,783 drug-related cases, detained 16,686 people, and seized 276.6 kg of heroin, 645 kg of marijuana, 62,870 lab-made drug pills, and 167,138 pills and tubes containing addictive substances, according to the statistics from Vietnam's Ministry of Public Security.
