29 arrested for anti-Thai riots at Kamrieng International Checkpoint

Reported by Khmerization

29 people were arrested and temporarily detained on 16th of April for anti-Thai riots at Kamrieng International Checkpoint in Battambang province, reports Koh Santepheap.

The riots occurred after 4 Cambodians were brutally beaten by 40 Thai people at Laem Market on the Thai side of the border on 13th April, 2009.

Rioters said that they came to the aid of the 4 beaten Cambodians but the Thai border guards stopped them. They requested to go to bring back the badly injured 4 Cambodians to the Cambodian side of the border but the Thai guards refused. They then asked the Cambodian border police to intervene to stop the beatings, but the Cambodian guards refused, says Koh Santepheap.

According to sources, up 1,000 Khmer people took part in the riots against the Thai brutality at the Kamrieng International Checkpoint. During the riots, the Cambodian rioters threw stones over the fence breaking windows of the Thai border post. They then burnt Thai flag and the picture of the Thai king which led the Thai border guards to fire many rounds of ammunitions.

Mr. Chhim Kim Hong, police inspector of Kamrieng District said that the fighting broke out between a group of Khmer gangsters and a group of Thai gangsters while the Cambodian youths went to the Thai side of the border the celebrate the New Year festivities. He also said that Cambodian authority cannot intervene to help rescue the injured Cambodians immediately because they have to make legal representations to the Thai side first and it takes time. He said that only two Khmer youths were injured and they were handed over to the Cambodian authority at 7 pm on the same day.

According to Koh Santepheap, despite the anti-Thai riots had subsided, on the morning of 14th April, about 100 youths, angry with the Khmer border guards who refused to intervene to save their friends, gathered at Kamrieng Border International Checkpoint. They rioted and, according the police, they turned against the Khmer authority by throwing stones at the police and damaging public properties. 29 youths were arrested and charged with injuring police and damaging public properties.

The arrested youths claimed that the police came to their house the next morning, manhandled, beaten, robbed them of their money and mobile phones and then arrested them.

Left: The Cambodian youth who was one of the victims of the Thai beatings and the arrested youths were seen bundled into the pick-up trucks and taken to Battambang detention centre awaiting trials.

The 29 arrested youths had been sent to Battambang court, but Mr. Koy Kanya, prosecutor for Battambang District Court, said that, among the 29, only 4 of them will be charged because of proof beyond reasonable doubt.

According to Koh Santepheap, many people were very surprised that, while refusing to intervene to help rescue the injured Cambodians, the Khmer authority had turned on those who wanted to help the Cambodian victims by beating them, arresting them and jail them. It is very painful indeed, they said.

What are the Khmer border guards doing? if they just stand by their and get the money from Khmer people crossing the border checkpoints without protecting Khmer interests, what is the use of being there? If you guys see Khmers being beaten by fucking Siamese, why you guys didn't intervene? Motherfucker Khmer guards and government!!! If this case would have happened with your relatives...what would you do? Still ignore??? I don't think so!!! Don't sleep while working...keep your eyes open and be nationalistic conscientious!!!

It's very sad that Khmer guards standing doing nothing and let Thai thugs beat up the Khmers. To add insults to injuries, the Khmer youths were beaten and arrested by Khmer guards when they protested against the Thai brutalities. it saddened me.

It's me one of the refugee living in Site 8 refugee Camp in Prachinburi province between 1982-1992. I have experienced alot with the bastard Siamese soldier/army. They are as cruel and ruthless as barbarians and wild animals. They always tried to arrest Khmers and kicked or killed almost every time they see Khmers crossing out of fence.

They are the hell-born barbarians

Khmer government treats their own people so cheap. I never see such treatment in other country. Hun Sen is so strong with their own people. But, just a piece of shit with foreign abusing their own people.

You are right man!! I strongly appreciate your comments! Hun Sen is only strong with his own unarmed and weak people such as: grabbing people's land, burning people's houses if refused to leave their homes wanted by his blood sucking companies (7NG or Mee Ka Phu company or Ah Lao Meng Khin and Mee Ka Pheap company etc.)

Pls read the full story from Kohsantepheap. The information posted here is not complete and not are all correct. Pls understand that the incident occurred on the Thai side and it is by law out of Cambodian police jurisdiction. Cambodian police could not just intervene in this case they need time to go through diplomatic channel in order to do that. It is actually the job of the Khmer consulate in there to intervene. No one was arrested for the riot again Thai that day. They were arrested for the incident on the next day when about 100 rioter stormed Khmer checkpoint in the morning. The destroyed state properties.... by law they should be arrested no matter where they are.

I am not saying that all those who have been arrested should be arrested since i know that some of Khmer police (who are fucking dirty) took the opportunity to arrested anyone for the money later....

My point to the previous comment is that pls understand the full story before you react.

Thanks and happy new year to every one,

They protested against the Thais and Khmer police tried stop them by using force. That's why reacted. These policemen are only strong with Khmer people, and allowed the Thais to look down on Khmers.

Anger and Revenge are not answer to any problems. The hatred between the countries will not end if both sides still does not learn from mistakes in the past. People need to look at bigger pictures before jump into conclusion. We're human being with brain and we should rise above violent and all these. Cambodian hates Thais, Thais beat Cambodian. WHEN WILL IT STOP??? How will ASIAN, the black head, surpass European or even able to stand tall next to them. If we can't even united as a strong bond. Do we really want to be the next Middle-East?? where war can hold to the next 50-100 years???? WAKE UP EVERYONE!!!
