The Phnom Penh Post invites its readers to register their opinion on its editor's decision to characterize the word "Yuon" as being racist

Yuon is neutral word to refer to Vietnam, not a racist epithet

Letter to The Phnom Penh Post

[The Phnom Penh Post] Editor’s note: The decision to characterise the term yuon as a racist epithet when used to describe the country of Vietnam or its citizens in the story ‘Sam Rainsy declares border victory’ (February 2, 2010) by Meas Sokchea was made by the editors of The Phnom Penh Post. We invite all readers to register their opinions on this issue and urge them to direct their comments to the editors of the newspaper and not individual reporters, who played no role in determining editorial policy on this matter.

Dear Editor,

I am dismayed at Sokchea Meas’s ignorance of the meaning of the word yuon (“Sam Rainsy declares border victory”, February 2, 2010). As a Cambodian, Mr Meas should have known clearly that this word had existed in the Khmer vocabulary since time immemorial, even before the existence of the word “Vietnam” and that the meaning of the word is not “a racist epithet”.

The word yuon we Cambodians use to describe the Vietnamese people is equivalent to the word mien the Vietnamese people use to describe the Khmer people. If the Vietnamese are offended by the word yuon, then should we Khmer be offended by the word mien that they use to describe us?

The word yuon is a neutral vocabulary. It does not carry any racist connotations. If anything at all, it is just a slang word equivalent to the words “Aussie” for the Australians, “Yankee” for the Americans, “Pommie” for the English or “Kiwi” for the New Zealanders, etc.

Also, the word yuon is a Khmer word we use to call the Vietnamese, while the word Vietnam is a Vietnamese word the Vietnamese people use to describe themselves. If the Vietnamese are offended by the word yuon, should the French be offended when the English people called them French instead of the French words “Francais” or “Francaise”? Or vice versa, should the English people feel offended when the French people call them “Anglais” or “Anglaise” instead of “English”?

The Thai call Khmer kmen, not Khmers, and we don’t feel offended. But when Khmer people call Thai people siem (derived from the word Siam), the world thinks that we are racist. The world has always looked at Cambodians as the villains with regard to Khmer-Vietnamese relations and Khmer-Thai relations. It is not fair.

I hope The Phnom Penh Post can be clear on the definition of the word yuon from now on.

For your information, I’d like to draw your attention to a detailed article by Kenneth T So regarding the definition of the word yuon:

Great to discuss about Yuon word. I would like to share my idea on that. Why Yuon and Why Vietnam? I agree that before January 7, 1979, Cambodian used this word Yuon for called Vietnamese people without pejorative connotation. But after 7 January 1979, Yuon word has a pejorative connotation. 3 Cambodian factions of resistance at Cambodian-Thai border used the word Yuon and have the bad connotation: Yuon meaning that a group of people who invade Cambodia, do bad thing against Cambodian people, all bad thing belong to Yuon. So, indirectly, when these people used this word it meaning a negative view on Vietnamese people. These people should recognize their mind and their volunteer to use this word. Some time, Opposition use this word Yuon, automatically and indirectly, for insult an other race. So, this word Yuon is changed their sense, content since 1979. Yuon is not a neutral word but the word has pejorative connotation agaisnt a race. It is indirectly a racist discrimation that Human right prohibt and you Opposition, democrate should use the right word and do not take the profit. Opposition and others people use this word for political profit also for make strenght their speech. You do something for yourself, for your group but you profit the sadness of people for your popularity. It is not criticism for construction.
Why vietnam? These word is neutral to call a country and a people conforming to the Inddependance and sovereignity of a country. Opposition would like others people respect their right but yourself do not respect the right of others? How come?
As a cambodian has not political temdency, i would like invite all people to rethink this word and for me the word Yuon has a pejorative connotation since 7 January 1979 and this word used strongly by the Cambodian resitance force include Mr Sam Rainsy himself. But as a servant should recognize the reality. Of course that when Thai or Vietnam call us others name, we are desappointed also. and if they use the pejorative word qualified to us Cambodian. How come? It is globalization and Democratization era, i think it is time to respect each other if you want other rewspect you and dispute culture or political profit for theri own parti is not Cambodian vision. Welcome your comment!!!!

Pourquoi discutons-nous le mot Yuon?
Il n'est pas important.Sam Rainsy ou autres peuvent appeler " Yuon" ce qu'ils veulent.L'mportance est que notre pays bien aimé " CAMBODGE " est entrain de Yuoniser par le Vietnam

Anonymous said...

mr Khemara, those are what yuons and yuon slaves think and want to impose this yuon thinking to khmer. khmer dont need yuons to tell them what to say or what to think .

You talk about respect, what respect are you talking about. Do yuons know anything about respect while profaned too much hated, animosity and killing against other people to expand its territory, race and culture? And now yuons and their sympathizers worry about a insignificant detail while make blind eye to all the horrific crimes that yuons committed against other.

When responsibility can be part of yuon mentality and culture? Yuons rather assume of their own acts and responsibility than impose their stupidity and illness to other.

Takeo said...

Stop calling "YUON" call them "JO PREY" it will fit the current situation in Cambodia. When about 7 millions JO PREY in Cambodia stealing land, moving boundary line, killing Khmer people with poison foods, poison products, and etc. The CPP making laws to evict and prosecute Khmer people it was all the JO PREY tactics to make Khmer killing Khmer same as the Khmer Rouge era.

For 30 years Hun Sen should learn something from his boss not to follow his boss demands.

When I was young I heard from my neighbor that Vietnamese soldiers (1979-1985)persuaded him not to call our self as Khmer. They were stressing the meaning of Khmer as the word of people of cheap behavior and pejorative.

I rejected that and said Vietnamese didn't want us to know our history of the Khmer Empire, the conflict after the fall of the golden era of the Khmer, between Khmer and Youn....the part of Khmer land (Khmer Kampuchea Krom) lost to Youn before the word of Vietnam/Vietnamese had even existed.

Khmer have never upset what ever they called us...Khmer, Khmen (we consider Thai does not have sound of R in their pronunciation), Kampuchea, Kampuchhan, Kampuchha-chhun and/or Cambodian.

Nevertheless, those two neighboring countries have always taken very concern the words of Siem or Youn. The reasons were because of they weren't the first inhabitants in the region of Indochina peninsula and they wanted to hide their history that they were the one who invaded and stole the territory from Khmer Empire.

We respect the right of the people and our neighboring countries, but we also wish to draw the world attention that the words Siem or Youn do not mean we are racist and/or pejorative.

It's just like they call us Khmer or Cambodian.

It's a nonsense argument about the word "Yuon" as "Yuon" has been so named themselves many hundred years ago; I mean since they were the minority in Tong Keng. Even their alphabets have been stolen from French-English. In short, no one can stop Khmers from calling "Yuons" as "Yuons." He who think this word sounds racist is himself dumb.

" I agree that before January 7, 1979, Cambodian used this word Yuon for called Vietnamese people without pejorative connotation. But after 7 January 1979, Yuon word has a pejorative connotation.."

=Tell me who said that the word "YOUN" has change its meaning after 7 January 1979? It is you who said that the word "YOUN" has change its meaning! Even if the Khmer resistance fighters use the word "YOUN" and it doesn't qualify them to be a racist. The reason the Khmer resistance fighters call the Vietnamese people "YOUN" because there is no other way or any better way beside the word "YOUN" which fully describe the Vietnamese people and not only that the word "YOUN" was coined thousand of years ago long before Vietnam existed as a country!

So for those foreigners or Vietnamese people who insisted that the word "YOUN" is a racist word because they are blind and lack of understanding in Cambodian culture, language, and history! Don't even try to play Cambodian expert base on wrong interpretation and assumption! Don't try to force anything down Cambodian or Khmer people throat to have it your way because the Khmer or Cambodian people have empire full of rich history and culture way before the Vietnamese have a country called Vietnam! Khmer or Cambodian people reserve the right to use their language without any interferences from the foreigners and the Vietnamese people because you don't see Khmer or Cambodian people interfere with the foreigners and the Vietnamese people from using their language!

Don't play Khmer or Cambodian expert and if you don't know just ask and stop trying to score political point because this is the cheapest and the lowest any human can do by using a simple word base on wrong personal interpretation and assumption!

Tell that Yuan Racist to learn about the Yuan Dynasty of China. Viet was part of China when the Mongol installed Yuan in China. So China used the word YUAN for its currency, is it an insult for the Viet too? Khmer wrote the word YoUn with a U instead of an A just like Khmer wrote the word Siem with and E instead of an A due to Khmer none tonal language.

It is not racist word. YOUN is the tittle of original ethic which is the most population found VN today.

This is what I remember history told by Khmer Doctor Mr. Keng Vang Sak. It is not a mean word but it is just right history.

Most of Khmer people (thought in mind) use word "YOUN" when they are angry.

"Youn" is not the only word use in Khmer language, Thai uses the word 'Youn' as well. If you are in Thailand, you say 'Youn' to the Thai people, they understand this word 'Youn' it means Vietnamese. Regarding the word 'Youn', I believe Loas and Burmese use the same as to Cambodian people.

I can speak Thai, and according to the Thai, they hat YOUN as well.

In every day interaction with Vietnamese in Cambodia, Khmer people use word Youn without their interlocutors feel being offended since the later know that it is the way people refer to them in the streets. Sometime they also add "Bong Pa-Aun" to word "Youn" to express their friendship. I think that if Cambodians are asked to say "Vietnam", it's like we ask them to be political correct in the way we say "African Americans" for "Black American" or "Asians" in place of Chinese. Actually, it's "artificial" or "unreal" to politicize the language. You can find the word "Ya-va-na or Youn" on Khmer inscriptions of Angkor era. The word Youn is very different from the word "Mien" the Vietnamese use to refer to Cambodians. In Vietnamese language, "mien" means barbarians, not only pejorative, but racist. The problem of usage of word "Youn" was brought up by the invasion of Vietnamese Army and the installation of CPP people in Phnom Penh. That way, people in Phnom Penh think that they are honouring those who help them to take power and a sure way to please them. So please stop being offended with this usage which is the natural way for Cambodians to refer to their neighbours. It is not derogative or pejorative. It's very insincere or artificial otherwise!

Asking Cambodians to use the word Vietnam to call Vietnamese is no different from asking them to call themselves Cambodia instead of Cambodians or Khmers, or China for Chinese or France for French. Even Vietnamese them self use "Ngoi Viet" instead of "Ngoi Vietnam"! In Cambodian language, Vietnam refers to a country and not people of that country. The same way in French language, Vietnam is a country while Vietnamiens its people. It is the same in English. It is wrong to refer to inhabitants of Vietnam as Vietnam. Cambodians call themselves Khmer the same way they call their neighbours Young and Siem or Leav. Why don't we ask them to call inhabitants of Thailand, Thailand instead of Thai and inhabitants of Laos, Laos instead of Laotians? Grammatically is dead wrong! Khmer, Youn, Lao, Siem or Thai refer to inhabitants of Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos and Thailand. There no issues of racism what so ever. Wanting to use just one word Vietnam to refer to the country or the people of that country is politicizing the matter and it is against all the rules in any language of the world. So please shut it up those who don't know the Khmer language!!!

Do we want to send a maasage that what Khmerrouge Victimes want is not justice and thruth but money? Money is more iportant than justice and life?

Mr. Chom Mey the Self called KhmerRouge Victime Who Only Dared to Loook At Duch in Eyes to Eyes, preferes some money and 50% justice!

What is 50% justice ?

Justice for the Camodian now (Since we all victimes) is the thruth of what happening! Since real thruth could never be found or not only just one thruth! we want to hear the lawyers crose exame of who saw or involve with the crime!Specially the higher
rank!

We want this process of justice to teach the next generation of how not to let the crime to be happening against from the point of view of the King down to a poor hadicape citizen!

We want notthing more thant gathering as many thruth as posible. NO money nor imprison any body! But what was wrong who did wrong, and how was wrong!

So the whole country or may be the whole world can create a system that prevent the crime of genocide to happen again any time any where else!

No MONEY for the wrong reason please! our country is corrupted to the core! They are selling justice for money and thing that for peace and forgiveness!

My relative lives can not be replaced by any money! But the thruths that help prevent the evil to strike again any where on earth!!

Dear KI,

Here is my response I'd like to send to PPP editors. Can you post it on you blog, and send a copy to PPP? Thanks,

*********************
The recent characterization of the word “YOUN” by PP Post (foreign) editors is arguably absurd and provocative. It is outrageous that some Westerners think they have the rights to go around and impose their views on different parts of the world without any respects for the local histories, cultures and traditions. That kind of attitude is one of the main reasons why we still have so many conflicts and violence in the world.

That being said, the word “YUON” was originally introduced, without passion or prejudice, as a reference to the ethnic group living in the Northern part of what is presently known as Vietnam. In the present days though, particularly after the 1979 invasion, Vietnam has fallaciously publicized or campaigned that word, which has been in use for hundreds of years, as racist, derogatory or pejorative. For Khmer people, such campaign shows once again Vietnamese’s blatant attempt at deception to rewrite its dark history, and to cast aggressors as victims and vice versa.

Historically, “yuon” ethnic had repeatedly exploited Khmer’s compassion, kindness, generosity, and later weakness, to absorb Khmer’s land and assimilate Khmer’s culture and tradition. Some of the methods they used to assimilate Khmers were among the most cruel and barbaric in human history. Till the present days, these Yuons continue to inflict extreme suffering on Khmer people, and I would challenge all editors of PP Post to visit or live with Khmer Krom people to discover the trust themselves.

Yuons know fully well that Khmers would never forgive and trust them again because of the historical losses and sufferings. So they are doing everything they can to erase that dark history from Khmers’ memory. One way to achieve that goal is to eliminate the word “Yuon” from Khmer language because they (Yuons) see that word as a bitter reminder to all Khmers of the deceptions, coercions, crimes and atrocity committed by Yuon ethnic to Khmer people. By forcing Khmers to call them Vietnamese, they hope Khmers younger and future generations will not remember the dark history. They are wrong! As our ancestors had done in the past, we will resist them and tell the history to our children and grand children as it happened.

So why is it so important to Vietnam that current and future Khmer generations are not reminded or told of the dark history between Khmers and Yuons? To some foreigners, it has the appearance of a normal way to leave the past behind and embrace a new world. But to Khmer people who have been exposed to Vietnam’s ambitions and aggressions for hundreds of years, it is just another yuons’ attempt to fulfill Ho Chi Minh’s dream of annexing the remaining Khmer territory.

Undeterred Nationalist

PS: I am writing a song and hope to share with all of you once completed. Here is an excerpt:

“ KHMER EUY SAUM NEAK KOM PLIX THA

The word Yuon is arguing to have a negative connotation. Would it matter if this word is replaced with the word diamond. Diamond has some novelties, right? There is also an argument of blood diamond because of the way the diamond is being produced.

So if Vietnam or Yuon concentrate on being righteous, I would imagine novelty and prestigious would follow. History is your trace.

There are good Vietnamese/Yuon. They do not deserve to be tainted with negative connotation. They respect existent of Khmer as well.

Many Khmers appreciates the innocent lives of the vietnameses soldiers that got rid of Khmer Rouge. They do not appreciate the intention. It took the world to get Vietnam to withdraw from Cambodia.

Look at the portion of South Vietnam, it was part of Cambodia.

Ok. We argue it is history in the old period and it was a period of expansionist. But how about the most recent border marking issue, it took the helpless peoples to protest and a possible international involvement....Does it really matter what word to use mask bad deeds???

Vietnam War is about independent and free of manipulation. It is a heroic idea and belief. If you are real, please extend to your neighbors.
