Rolling blackouts are being conducted in areas of Phnom Penh because the city's power usage is exceeding its capacity, local media reported on Wednesday.
The Electricite du Cambodge (EDC) official, who declined to be named, was quoted by the Cambodia Daily as saying that the current stretch of hot weather was to blame for the blackouts in Phnom Penh.
"The requirement of people using power is higher than our ability .... It is 10 percent higher than our ability," he was quoted as saying. "The blackout relates to the hot weather and the electricity generator being broken from overuse."
The official said EDC has been cutting power to difference areas in Phnom Penh for one to two hours each day to mitigate the problem.
The official said that Phnom Penh customers currently demand about 270 megawatts of power, but EDC only has the ability to supply 240 megawatts.
Keo Rattanak, director of EDC, confirmed that the blackouts were due to a lack of supply, but added that other factors were involved, such as equipment maintenance before the coming rainy season and the renovation of the Phnom Penh roads and drainage system.
Oum Ryna, deputy director of the meteorology department at the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology, said that the weather in April and May was hotter this year than last year.
Ryna said the temperature had risen to 40 degrees in Phnom Penh on Monday, adding that the temperature had been averaging about 41 degrees in Battambang and Siem Reap provinces since the end of April.

Cambodia get now electricity from an overland electric line from Vietnam.
Last Year they told the People that from now on there will be no electric problems anymore.
It is really face loosing.
People in Thailand, Vietnam are looking down on Cambodians and say;
Are they too much stupid to fix their electric problem. Now we, the Vietnamese People sending them enough electricity and they are still too much stupid, unqualified and whatever to fill the demand of the People.
So next time, do not be surprised when foreigners looking down on Cambodia because they always need help from other countries.
Even the daily things they have to buy from Thailand and Vietnam.

Half of the country is belonging to Vietnam now via Economic Land Concession for 99 years! Who know what will happen in these areas? Khmer does not allow to access these areas at all.
i'm tired of blackouts in phnom penh and cambodia, in general. no wonder they need to have unlimited supplies our uninterrupted supplies of electricity in cambodia. so, why are people complained about cambodia's dams, etc?
this is the reason why cambodia continue to look for electricity in every method we can. i hate blackouts! so stop your silly bitching, ok!
What Cambodia's dams? You mean the dams that Vietnam build in Cambodia?
Nothing in Cambodia, is made from Cambodia, even things that are built in Cambodia.
Cambodia does not have electricities of its own, does not have roads built from its own money, does not have telephone of its own, does not have its own airplanes, does not have anything since Hun Sen come to power.
Cambodia, a land of "Pearl of Asia", now is a land of import, and borrowed money and projects on loans.
And they say, look at the progress we have made so far!
I say, look at the debts you got us in so far! None of the projects are truly Cambodians! How can you call that progress?
The dams which will be build in Cambodia are NOT for the Cambodian People.
The Chinese dam in Kratie will have a capacity of 3.500Megawatt.
Phnom Penh need at the moment less than 300 Megawatt.
The electricity will go to other countries for a good profit.
The problem I see is that Cambodia has to import nearly everything from other countries.
With which money they do this?
At the moment this is money they get from donations from Western Countries.
These Western Countries are having now a Financial Crisis so there will be less money in the future.
If there are no Western Countries Cambodian People will depend on the help of Thailand, Vietnam and China.
Guess what this Countries will do with the Cambodian People if they know that Western Support come to an end for Cambodia?
A Business Deal under Countries would look like this:
USA get Oil exploration rights. China and Thailand too. Some parts of Cambodia are going to Thailand and Vietnam.
Everybody of the Business Partners will make a very good profit!

Nobody care about Human Rights when there is a Financial Crisis worldwide!
At the moment they are just thinking to find the right reason to start a fight against Cambodia.

This is to show you that the official at Electricite du Cambodge are fucken incompetent, stupid, and all the above! This same officials have over 10 years to solve this fucken problem of blackout but no they sit on their hand and do nothing!
It is the same old fucken excuse as usual!
what i don't get is that cambodia is a small country with population about 15 millions. other countries in the world have bigger land mass and larger population and yet they are able to find solutions to electricity usage, etc... i wonder why a small cambodia with small population can't do the same? you have to wonder out loud, really! bigger countries have bigger mouths to feed, etc, you would think a smaller country like cambodia would be able to do the same or better given its smaller sizes, etc... yet, it is hard? why? is it too many mouths to feed? too large a land mass to manage? or too unskilled or braindead people, or what? what is it? i don't get it? i suggest they look around the world for solution. enough already! you're only hurting your own country and people. for once, show cambodia you love it and want and can make a real difference, really! wake up people!
