PHNOM PENH, Cambodia — Impoverished Cambodia plans to build a 1,820-foot (555-meter) skyscraper, its prime minister said Wednesday, a feat that would give one of the region's least-developed capitals the tallest building in Asia.
Prime Minister Hun Sen said he had approved a master plan for the skyscraper, which would be located about half a mile (one kilometer) from the Royal Palace in Phnom Penh — a dusty city of colonial villas, slums and one standout skyscraper, the recently completed Canadia Tower that is about 377 feet (115 meters) high.
Hun Sen did not say when construction would start, how much it would cost or give any other details, except that it would be built by a Cambodian company, Overseas Cambodia Investment Corp., owned by tycoon Pung Khiav Se.
The company's project manager, Touch Samnang, said preliminary estimates suggest the building would cost $200 million, but the project was being studied by experts and government ministries. He said it would include a shopping mall, hotel, apartments and an entertainment center.
That figure is dwarfed by the sum for what is currently Asia's tallest building, the Taipei 101 in Taiwan. Rising 1,667 feet (508 meters), it cost about $1.6 billion. It had been the world's tallest since 2004 but was overtaken in January when Dubai unveiled the Burj Khalifa, which rises 2,717 feet (828 meters) from the desert.
Cambodia, whose commerce is tiny by international standards, has been experiencing a real estate bubble for the past few years, but several ambitious construction projects have been delayed or suspended.

Only Cambodians could have such bad idea!
How it could work if Cambodians salary starts from $50 per month ?
How companies could afford to rent if they couldn't even pay their employees reasonably ?
Do you think Cambodian people still don't know how to do anything?Or just American do it or Khmer opposition do it?

It's not a skyscapper building. It's just a tower like CN Tower in Toronto or Eifel Tower in Paris.
HUN XEN FAVORITE BRAND 555!
HUN XEN FAVORITE TOWER 555!
HUN XEN FAVORITE HOBBY 555!
that's good for phnom penh to have a landmark structure like tour eiffel in paris, cn tower in toronto, opera house in sidney, etc, so when people visit phnom penh, they will immediately recognize it as phnom penh, cambodia. i think that's an excellent idea, you know! we want phnom penh to be world famous city, etc...

Famous for what 12:03? PP is famous for begging, poverty, beer garden, that is what mostly white men and tourists remember when they visit Cambodia. You think we are interested to visit a high tower? Hell no!
cambodia needs to attract world's attention in development of the country. god bless cambodia.
I think this announcement is actually hurt Cambodia real estate industry in the short and long run. To some of the real estate investors, this is a bad sign of investing in office buildings which is going pretty well right now. I hope Hun Sen is not trying to be Jayavaraman VII in his endeavor to build the biggest temple.
We don't need tallest building. We need many small buildings, cheap rents for the poor. That's what we need.
Hun Sen is getting stupid with his crazy vision!
Just make sure the Khmers have enough to eat first and stop being dependent on foreign aids before talking about building the tallest building in Asia!
I think Hun Sen is trying to divert attention of the Cambodian people from his current problems of incompetence and other problems related to Cambodian territorial integrity and sovereignty.
Dreams are free. You cannot build such a high building on ground which consist of swamp. They have to go to far down befor they hit hard rock.
i watch documentary on malaysia when they start building the petronas buildings, they ran into problem like you said, 8:52am, but look they fixed it and completed the project; so, cambodia will probably experience the same, but the point is don't get discouraged, instead, study and watch documentary on other nations on how they build their world record skyscrapers, etc, ok! be smart and learn from them all, ok! god bless cambodia.
It's a good idea this building would show the word that beside from greatest temple of Ankorwat we have tallest building here, it's better for our tycoon just keep their money in the pillow now dick it out to invest.
I strongly support this idea. It's could attract more tourist to Cambodia.
