PHNOM PENH — A top Khmer Rouge leader on trial for genocide and other atrocities walked out of Cambodia's UN-backed court on Tuesday for a second straight day, to the dismay of survivors.
"Brother Number Two" Nuon Chea, wearing a woolly hat and his trademark sunglasses, refused to stay for proceedings that will focus on preliminary legal objections by co-defendant Ieng Sary, a former foreign minister.
"I will walk out and return to my detention facility," Nuon Chea said, adding he would only return to "actively participate" when his own case was discussed. The 84-year-old was then escorted out by three security guards.
The four accused face charges including genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes over the deaths of up to two million people from starvation, overwork, torture or execution during the Khmer Rouge's brutal 1975-79 rule.
Nuon Chea's defiant actions mirrored those on the first day of the trial on Monday, when he left the courtroom in protest at the handling of the investigation and legal proceedings, saying he was "not happy".
The four elderly defendants are allowed to be absent if they refuse to cooperate.
Their complex trial, expected to take years, is seen as vital to healing the traumatised nation's deep scars, and the regime number two's walk-out upset Khmer Rouge survivors.
"Nuon Chea is a bad person. I am quite disappointed with his behaviour," said farmer Thein Ouen who was one of hundreds watching the hearing from the public gallery.
"I think he does not want to take part in the trial. We want him to tell us the truth about the Khmer Rouge, but he is trying to hide it."
The other three accused, who also include former head of state Khieu Samphan and one-time social affairs minister Ieng Thirith, remained seated and appeared to be paying close attention the proceedings.
Led by "Brother Number One" Pol Pot, who died in 1998, the movement emptied Cambodia's cities and abolished money and schools in a bid to create an agrarian utopia before they were ousted from the capital by Vietnamese forces.

Bustard, give me the gun. I promise to finish this evil face off.
If we put our hate, anger aside and try to see :
1. why?
2. What is the real reasons behind Nuon Chea walking away?
Part of the real reason behind Nuon Chea walking away was his 300 witnesses were not allowed to do their jobs as witnesses such as having their presences in ECCC court room.
So the real reason that we the victims must find out as follow:
Why this ECCC so afraid of letting 300 witness showing up in this ECCC court room if Nuon Chea killed 1.7 million of Cambodians?
300 ? and 1.7 million Cambodians ?
What is the real reason behind this political show trial as some foreigner has said ( Dr. mosyokov ).
Not allowed Nuon Chea ' s 300 witnesses showing in ECCC Court room mean this ECCC and CPP are afraid of as follow:
1. ECCC and CPP so scare of those 300 Nuon Chea 's witnesses speaking out the truth about the real killer of 1.7 million Cambodian between 1975-1979.
2. ECCC and CPP so scare of Nuon Chea speaking out in the hearing about the real killer of 1.7 million Cambodian between 1975-1979.
This political show trial will face a lot obstacles from CPP and ending up with dissappointment from majority of Cambodian.
By law Nuoun Chea has right to have witnesses .
Why this ECCC not allowed 300 of Nuon Chea witnesses showing in ECCC court room.
Why this ECCC so scare of 300 Nuon Chea witnesses speaking out and showing up int this ECCC court room.
Victims upset as Khmer Rouge leader snubs court
I have said many time , and many months before full hearing of Case 002 on this KI-Media that :
This ECCC or Khmer Rouge Trial will face a lot of obstacles from CPP and end up with dissappointment of majority of Cambodians.
Whay?
Because CPP formed by yuon Hanoi officially in 1951 ( unofficially before 1951 )so yuon Hanoi have strong influent over this ECCC political show.
The Khmer Rouge leaders by helping Yuon Vietcong to fight against the Americans, they contracted diseases which wiped out nearly 2 millions of Cambodians.
All Khmer Rouge leaders contracted the disease from Vietnam to kill more Khmer which has to be watched out carefully including Yuon Hun Sen itself.
Beofre pol pot die, he said its youn.
Now, youn is controlling the ECCC.
The ECCC is an obstruction to justice. That bich chea leang should be prosecuted! She is a vietcong.
Whack all KR leaders with bamboo stick. In the court of law, of course!
KR is past...now another genocide is continuing The VietCong Regime!
HunXen CPP VietCong is KR 2.0. Must be brought to justice as well.
The VIetcong is very elusive and sneaky and must be handled firmly and vigorously...and relentlessly!
This junk court is a worldwide enterprise of political and historical falsification of history for the glory of the criminals from all ground, not for the victims but against the victims as usual
This junk court is a worldwide enterprise of political and historical falsification for the glory of the criminals from all ground, not for the victims but against the victims as usual
As long as the free world continues to cooperate with those criminals and see the colonization as way to prosper by sacrificing millions innocent life, the world will get never get out of this kind of crime and Cambodia and Cambodian people continue to be victims of those colonial criminals…..Those criminals from all ground are responsible for the crime committed against Khmer, not only the yuon vc or the bunch of yuon vc killing tools alone
Can someone just sneak in to the detention center and cut off the heads of those 4 and be done with it. To see ah kanhchas NUON CHEA behave in such a manner in court really disgust us.
Hun Sen, Heng Samrin, Chea Sim and other CPP's members were also KHMER ROUGe. Don't forget them!!!!!!
