Hun Sen Affirms Neutrality in South China Sea Conflict

“If Cambodia does not want to interfere in the South China Sea conflict, Asean members won’t be happy.”
Prime Minister Hun Sen met with senior diplomats on Tuesday, reminding them that Cambodia will remain neutral in regional conflicts, including those in the South China Sea and on the Korean peninsula.
Cambodia is the head of Asean this year, and as such, “plays a role as coordinator in various conflict in the region, but not to side with one side or the other,” Hun Sen told reporters after meeting 26 ambassadors and eight consuls, according to a spokesman.
A number of Asean countries have conflicts with China over maritime territories in the South China Sea, and Cambodia retains friendly relations with both North and South Korea.
Ou Virak, head of the Cambodian Center for Human Rights, said Cambodia’s role as the president of Asean means it must move discussions over such conflicts forward.
“If Cambodia does not want to interfere in the South China Sea conflict, Asean members won’t be happy,” he said.
On the other hand, China, which has strong bilateral partnerships with many Southeast Asian nations, including Cambodia, will not want Asean interference, he said.
In Tuesday’s meeting, Hun Sen also reaffirmed Cambodia’s push for a non-permanent seat at the UN Security Council, Foreign Ministry spokesman Koy Kuong told reporters.
Hun Sen also said he would be seeking new markets for Cambodian products throughout Asean and farther afield, including East Africa and the Middle East, Koy Kuong said.

Cambodia's interest is above all! We are a global player among the world community, so please it well, so our people can pursue happiness.
The the most important tasks for Cambodia to achieve now are: Independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, economic developments for all rich and poor, stop the madness of deforestations, stop illegal land grabbing, cease all land concession that negatively effect the livelihood of farmers, displace farmers, etc.., good education for all, good health care for all, clean up the corruption from top to bottom, build world class infrastructure, rule of law, respect human right, independent court systems, enforcing proper immigration rule, the Cambodian Embassies should have power to issue passports, identity cards etc to Cambodian nationals working, living overseas, all Cambodian nationals must be able to take part in the Cambodian national election with the help of the embassy.

Hun Sen must stay away from South China Sea territory disputes for the sake of Kingdom continuing economic growth. Khmer must not once again played the victims of any sideshow like the Vietnam War.The CPP is wise not toeing or taking side in middle of tug-of-war amidst China, Philippines, and Vietnam conflicts that may lead to all out war while US cheerleader on sideline. Hun Sen neutral stand and isolate itself on this sensitive issue prove the regime is competent and has grown to maturity in realpolitik given that Khmer has no part in the disputes, yet China is the kingdom's largest
FDI investors-let alone the biggest annual donor.
As a sole world super power since the collapsed of the Soviet Union in late 80's, today US hegemony is declining and curbs out its blue navy present in pacific by utter for secure the shipping lane in SCS as proxy with pretext to contain China rise. If such schemes went south without align China to pivot within its yoke, the yanks will pack up, lift the anchors, and hit North home for good while before ever to return back again. China growth helped Asia to prosperity economically. China helped rescue the collapse of Asia currency crises less than a decade ago, even an ingrate nation like Vietnam, a ancient foe, are benefit of grants and free-interest loans in the past decades from its cousin next door.

Be neutral, humble, sit and observe, and follow the flow. Every nation for itself!!! Khmer needs peace.

I agree with you as being neutral. But keep in mind that Cambodia is in a leadership role now as ASEAN chair. It must make wise decision.
One thing I observe,IMO, there will never an event like that of the Vietnam War era. Khmer are more educated now. The world are more global. Social medias are everywhere. Any unpopular decision made that affect the nation like in the 70s era, will draw reactions from social medias instantly. For this reason alone, I think, that our country will not fall into the abyss like the KR again.
The cpp are cowards, they won't dare! They are only good at serving their masters, and the same time oppressing their people.

Cambodia is not a real Asian chair, I think, the real Asian chair in this's case is Vietnam, Vietnam will tell Camodia what to do to serve VN's interests in particular.
